To answer your above question, I bought a 944 new in 1984 and had to purchase a set of floormats from the dealership. They said Porsche on them, and they came with Porsche cardboard frames on the mat set if I remember.

I believe they cost around 100 bucks back in the day. They were grey/beige like the interior color is on my Guards Red normal, but have a grey foam backing on them to keep them from sliding around. A quite heavy floormat and similar in design to what Lloyds Mats sold for these models back then.

I also remember the option of buying a slightly lesser quality style mat with Porsche in script on the mat in a contrasting color. That same style came in another 944 I bought about 7 years ago in a 40,000 mile car, so they are quite well preserved. That mat is less weighty, has a jute backing and a contrasting color logo imprint of Porsche on the mats front and rear.

I ordered my first car, which I still own, as an M456 Weissach prepped unit with heavy anti-swaybars, sport Koni shocks, sport springs, and LSD and the list price was nearly 28,000 dollars. But the dealer I ordered it from did not give me the option of a floor mat from the factory, stating that they sold them over the counter from Porsche in the Parts Department.

I have seen them show up from time to time on eBAY both new and used in mostly the style of mat with the jute backing I mentioned.

Best wishes with locating a set....... they may be a bit hard to source if looking for the two styles I mentioned. There are other aftermarket sellers, and some of these are actually quite good, but not the same as those two which sold in the times our cars were built.

By the way, what month was yours built ? Is it actually an '82 production / '83 model car ? ( I also own a quite low serial number early '82 build - 944 and the slight differences are vast between it and the other '84s I own.)

Default Mats

Thanks for the post. I will go to the shop this week where the 944 is being worked on and look for the build date sticker on the car.

I assume it will be on the driver's door like it is for my 911. As soon as I find out I will share details. The PO said that his/my 944 was the first delivered to the State of MI. So, I assume its may be an early production car, but I will find out for sure.

Also, thanks for the details on the mats. Interesting that they were aftermarket only options. So, that means there is no "correct" floor mat for the car. I will search online and pick out a set...or 2.

On my 1983 the build date sticker is under the hood, I think on the driver's side near the coolant expansion tank.

Default Build sticker

Attached are some pics of the car and the build sticker located under the hood just as you guys mentioned. The car has a build date of 11/1982, so it appears to be an early build 1983 944.

There is a pic of the engine compartment. Appears that a chipmunk was squatting and there were acorn and nut fragments all over, which I vacuumed out.

The prior owner purchased additional oil filters and he stored them in his garage for the past 29 yrs. So, I also took some pics of the Porsche oil filters, one of which I opened. Its my understanding that Porsche doesn't make a private brand oil filter any more.

My Porsche mechanic will start work on the car in the next week or so. I told him there was no hurry as I wanted him to make a proper assessment of the car and what was needed and then order all necessary parts. I have some time off next Monday, so i will be going there to wash and detail the car.

Hey, that's the same build date as mine! In fact your VIN looks pretty close to mine. I'll have to check at home.

Default Pirelli P6000 stock tires?

I'm surprised that this car came stock with P6000 tires. I've just put the same tires on my 944 and the tread wear rating is 180. If you would like to check the year of manufacturer on your tires if should be part of the DOT #.

I expect to visit the car/shop on Friday and I will take and upload a pic of the tire build date.

I will also take and upload pics on Monday of the paint / surface detailing that I plan on doing. The 944's surface is in really good condition and the paint is a metallic finish, so there is a clear coat. Just the same, I plan on detailing the car by hand and without machine so that I can best protect the paint/surface. I am looking forward to seeing it shine again!

You're 578, I'm 778. Exactly 200 apart. Maybe only a day difference! Howdy brother.

My 83 was built in 8/82 and event had the tab for the prop rod near the top of the left front strut they had in the 924. I really miss that car. Bought it in 1997 from the original owner with 94K miles. Got rearended in 2000 sitting stopped in traffic and it was totaled.

Did you take the cover with you to the shop? It would be great if they kept it covered when not working on it and USING fender covers. This might be something to look for on other cars in the shop, are fender covers on them?

Great story. Keep that dash out of the sun!

Gonna let the original owner take it for a spin, when all done?

Can you recommend a dash mat? Not sure what to look for in a dash mat.
Yes, I offered the prior owner that I would take him for a spin when the car is running.

I have also been contacted by Panorama magazine and they may write an articles about this car and the resto if I can get it running again. If they write an article on the car, I would like to include the prior owner in the article/pictures. He has been a great custodian of the car and I good person to work with.
