Drove my first 944 today
I'm coming from a 2007 Boxster owner as my only Porsche frame of reference but even after a short drive I can see the appeal of these cars. I really liked the driving position and how much closer and more connected to the road that the car felt versus most modern cars.
Unfortunately the example I drove had been parked for awhile and probably had an exhaust leak because it didn't take too long for fumes to start filling the cabin. The power window worked so I was able to get some fresh air but with the amount of smoke coming in the drive wasn't nearly as pleasant as I had hoped it would be.
One thing I had a question about was the clutch. Is the engagement point on 944's always so high? This one didn't catch until the absolute very end of the travel and required a fair bit of throttle to get moving in a forward direction.
At any rate, I need more seat time with 944's (and hopefully a 968 or two) because I am considering a purchase at some point in the future.

theres some adjustability in the clutch action but long travel can mean the clutch is pretty far worn.
the best advice youll get to start your search is "buy the nicest one in your budget".

yeah it engages kinda late... i find because of that i have to sit a little closer then what I would normally feel is a good distance... otherwise i hate having to stretch my left leg so much..
but once you put your seat ahead abit its alot better, although at first you do feel like your abit to far ahead.

Thanks folks. I need a larger sample size and I need to check out a car that is in better shape. The one I drove had signs of neglect and that is never going to give you the best impression.

FWIW, i am in the process of buying a 944, and the PO had the clutch done one year ago with a spring centered unit. When I drove it, the engagement point was low 1/3 travel, about what a Honda Civic would be.
Felt completely normal, and I had my seat all the way back. I was engaging clutch and brake essentially using ankle motion.
I wasn't planning on buying this 944, either. Too many projects and things going on, and I texted the owner that i would be withdrawing from the process. He encouraged me just to drive it as a comparison point. He's proud of his car, and has a nicely upgraded 911.
Well, he knew exactly what he was doing. When i got to drive it, even though it is a wheezing 140BHP at 5280 feet above sea level, the balance and engagement were very satisfying. I sort of need vehicles that are fun to drive slow (rode in on my VFR this morning, and passed a traffic checking sheriff as I was doing nearly double the speed limit; not cool).
After some light haggling, I agreed to give the 944 a home.
Good luck on future examples!

matmanx1, The pedal freeplay is adjusted at the top of the swinging clutch pedal. When driving after warmed up, how much freeplay is at the pedal. You should have some. Mine is set for about 3/4" freeplay right now.

To the OP: where are you located? You need to find a 'Lister and drive one that is well sorted to get the real experience.

I remember my first drive in one in 1984 but couldn't afford to buy it. Now in the latter years with the prices so low, I'm on my 4th (a 951). I love these cars and the lines they produced when they started with the racing version of the 924. They're the right version of handling, comfort (recaro seats) and economy. Agreed, they're maintenance hogs until you get everything right, but that's part of the fun for me....the "Phoenix" concept: the bird that rose out of the ashes to become a more beautiful and spectacular bird.

Have you thought of replacing the steering wheel with a Momo wheel that has the bottom squared off? It provides more knee room and the wheels look awesome.

Yes I have thought about it... But I'm not sure if I can part with that traditional wheel... Even as annoying as it is to hit the brake with it in the way!
