This ones been around for a long time. That said the car closest to the 944 that's in production right now is the FRS. I'd love to see Porsche do a car in that vein, but they won't as they've moved up market and there is not enough margin in an affordable sports car (30kish) for them to bother.

It does get your mind going though. Going through the 944 and considering many of the hard parts and underpinnings I see come from the 928 platform, and it makes you think...
What if Porsche the lot of the Panamera developments to build a 944?
Think of it as a Panamera Jr. without the fat. Take the 4.8 turbo, whack it in half to 2.4 turbo, and give a body like above. 50/50 distribution, light weight FR. Of course the price would be on par with current Cayman's but I think they would have a winner on their hands. With Mercedes now with a 4 cyl turbo pushing 400hp, there isn't a doubt that Porsche COULD do it.
Nothing against the Cayman, as it has it's niche. I just like the idea of bringing back the 944.

I went looking for other renderings and found this:
(Credit to Deviantart user Chrisinat0r)
It obviously has some Lambo inspiration and Panamera lines, but I think I know where those pop-ups are from....

That being said, a lightweight, fast spooling DOHC 2.4 liter 951 with ~300 hp and 300 ft-lbs in a lightweight 50-50 body would be a ton of fun mated to a 6 speed LSD gearbox or a 7 speed PDK box.
