I have an '84 that has lots of track oriented upgrades and more importantly lots of recent maintenance (timing belt & seals/rollers/water pump/clutch all are new 0 miles), feel free to shoot me a pm or an email

Unfortunately for these cars, beaters are plentiful and taking a good 944 and stripping to a track car is shameful since there are only so many left in good condition. That's one less for the purists. I'm all for safety and get what you are saying. I guess if you are going for a less than ideal example, be smart about it and don't go for the cheapest thing you can get. Something that has been neglected but never wrecked vs something that was maintained and preserved only to be torn apart and stripped down. Or buy into an existing track car!

I see them pop up all the time. Been tempted myself.

Just pointing out that running at 80-100% of a cars potential shouldn't be done in the lowest common denominator of a car like many seem to suggest buying.

I don't recall the original poster saying he wanted a piece of junk. I assume the reason he's looking at 944's is because for a reasonable amount of money he can get a fun track day car that's actually in good condition.

That's why I bought my 924S back in March 2011. I don't have $20K or more in the budget for a track car at this time. Maybe in a few years. For $4,600 I got the 924S with 52K miles in solid mechanical shape. By March 2012 I was in about another $5,000 and some number of hours in my garage. With new timing belts, water pump, motor mounts, ball joints, sway bars, Sparco seats, harnesses, and roll bar, I now have a very fun and safe track car. I did four DE's last year and I've done three this year (hoping to do another in October), and I've had a blast every time.

Solid, fun track car for about $10,000. That being said, if I had to pay someone for doing the timing belts, motor mounts, etc. that number would be considerably higher.

If I was ready to put $25K into a 996 or 964, then I'd tell the OP to come take a look at my car. I'm not that far away. However, it looks like finances will keep me in the 924S for a few more years. Actually, I still have enough work to do on my driving, that it's probably best from a learning experience for me to stay in this car a few more years anyway.

No ABS, no PSM, just a driver and his car.

He didn't. And my comments were not aimed at him.

They were aimed at the people recommending to find the "cheapest" version of car X.

No kidding. Well sorted, good looking, and about the best mix of parts for a 924/44/68 series track car. Not often you can drop a pin in the tow vehicle and be done.

Track cars should not be beaters!!!
You've obviously never raced in the 24 Hours of Lemons.

I was hoping you won't ask , ... You are not going to like what I bought, I never pictured myself in one but here goes: I got a 2000 Porsche Boxster (2.7 L) with brand-new track/race safety stuff: Hard top, 2 Cobra Monaco Pro track seats, 6 point Schroth seat belts, Harness bar, Roll Bar extensions, RS683 brake fluid, PFC Brake Pads, rooters etc. It has a new clutch too. It is street legal.
I know …not has fun as a 944 but I think this will server me well for what I am trying to do with it.
Thanks all for your support.

My boxster was a great car. I think you will like it. Have fun.

I'd love that setup in a new Cayman…..Maybe in a year or two.

I like it, and may do the same when things settle back to normal here.
