Post CV Joint bolts (what size)

Searched this site and found that an 8mm 12 pt star socket is called for on the CV joints. But last night I found that a 6mm allen socket fit in these bolts (not an 8mm). What do I need, a 6mm or 8mm star socket?

Where might I find one (retail). I'm planning on repacking my joints tomorrow and can't order the socket.

Tom, the bolt is M8, the matching tool is 6 mm.
You need the 12 sided tool bit.
The 6 sided alan key will kill the internal splines. BTDT.
Taking out a wrecked bolt is a major ....

Tom - Most definitely DO NOT use the Allen wrench. The 8mm 12pt tool should be readily available at most auto stores that have any kind of tools. I got mine at Pep Boys. Make sure the bolts are also as cleaned out as you can get them in order to allow the tool to get in all of the way.

TomH, It could be possible that your bolts have been replaced with hex heads. If not I bought the proper socket from Snap On. JimD

DO NOT USE THE WRONG TOOL.

Clean it out completely with a degreaser before you go in there and turn things. It's 12 point from what I recall, found at your local auto store, it will be $3 well spent.

According to this:

It's 8mm. But make sure.

It is 8mm 12 point. I pulled mine over the weekend. I bought the tool from Pep Boys (kit of 4 star sizes 6-12mm for $13.) Bad part is that after pulling and reinstalling one pair of CVs, the tool was shot. All the star points were mangeled. Does the $26 one from Performance Products last longer (hope so).
