Arrgh - what did I buy? Bought a 968 turbo conversion

I bought this car on Thursday for 4k and I think I paid too much. 1994 968 white on cashmere with a 951 engine and 951 LSD trans. The conversion was never finished though and the car has been sitting a while. There are 128k miles on the body and 100k miles on the engine.

It needs a windshield, rear hatch trim, way to latch down the hood, exhaust tip welded on, tires, door speaker pods, turbocharger cooling pump and relay setup, radiator, etc.

Josh,

If you get the engine running soon, (which you will), you've got a pretty nice car.

all the cosmetic stuff is minor.

after the spoiler trim is on...

1. black seat covers, rear seats gone.

2. thin down some oil base paint and roll on about 3 three coats on the carpets IN BLACK.

3. SEM all the side and rear panels, headliner. IN BLACK.

4. door cards/console/cassette box recovered in black leather.

5. dash repaired with urethane, and SEM in black.

6. 997 shift knob... black on aluminum from DC auto or L.A. dismantlers,

7. CS wheel in BLACK.

down the road, when the engine blows, you've got more parts for the turbo conversion *(black car).

white car/LSx.

congratulations.

I think he will feel good about his purchase after a good detail, rear spoiler, and windshield. I won't say smoking deal till we know what it takes to get it running and driving.

Edit: add a shift knob and random "small bits" to above list.

You should be able to get another hatch with spoiuler on it cheap. I have two spares, would just give one to you if you were close.

I think it's a decent deal for what you have. I have seen people pay alot more for a '944' with alot more issues.

I see no major nightmare issues.

I don't see anything that scares me either. A few good weekends and it will look like a differ car.

when I began shopping for a 968 in 2007, between cars.com and autotrader, there were about 70 examples being offered at any given time.....

prices were sky high then, with the cars selling for between $17~$32,000

I just paid a visit to cars.com, and there was exactly ONE!!

ONE 968 with a hard top and manual transmission w/ 90 k miles priced at $17,000.

of the 9 remaining cars, all were convertibles, most with tiptronics.... of those, all the decent examples were priced between $16,000 and $20,000. so, with prices being almost double what they were just a few years ago..... and given that you almost can't buy 968s with hard tops and manuals anymore..... about a year ago, i posted that basically, the only good deals on 968s are on Craigslist and Ebay (where you can sometimes catch people dumping).

for what people are getting for good cars... how can a roller selling for $3~4 k not be a good deal?

bonus # 1: comes with free engine to beat on and blow up.

bonus # 2: leftover 3.0 turbo conversion parts.

:biggulp:

You have a point.

I have to agree a few good weekends and some elbow grease will transform this car. Most of the cosmetic things seem fairly minor, good luck on getting it mechanically sound and keep us posted.

Funn944 07-01-2013 04:24 PM

It's amazing how similar the 968 and Panamera look.

CyCloNe! 07-01-2013 08:35 PM

i think its a good deal, i bet once you give her some tlc and that engine fires up you'll be very proud.

black944 turbo 07-01-2013 09:01 PM

This could be a super cool car with some work.

968gene 07-01-2013 11:31 PM

What to do?

Sell the wheels, sell the motor, and sell your soul...do the LS3 conversion. My project started with a $3,500 car.

BTW, I still have a two tone gray interior FS....

odurandina 07-01-2013 11:39 PM

there are 1 correct colors for a Porsche interior.
