Default REALLY annoying rattle

Hey guys back again. Got this really irritating rattle that I get when I accelerate. BUT, it happens right after I start taking my foot off the gas pedal. Doesn't happen while I'm driving. Any ideas? I don't want to tinker around and mess something up.

My window motors vibrate if I upshift too early around 15-1800 rpm but stop after I get to 2k

I'm starving my motor when I do that and its bad for the motor mounts, not something I do often but thats when it happens.

Where is the rattle coming from? Could literally be anything

It's coming from the exhaust That's for sure, Right underneath the driver's seat. Heat Shield ? I tried other things first like tapping the exhaust pipe (when it's cold lol). I turned on the car for a minute but I can't really trace the exact spot of the sound. It happens when I accelerate then depress the gas pedal. It sounds like Something metal for sure.

Hi! Although you can't really determine where the rattle is coming, from I'll take a shot at it. As I understand it, it comes on when you lift or decelerate. I have traced this "tinny" rattle on a few cars, my own included, to the heat shield above the muffler. Even though it is rubber mounted the low frequency exhaust note on decel will cause a harmonic resonance to set up in the shield that is very irritating to those of us that don't like rattles! It will eventually cause cracks at the mounting holes. What I have done in the past is put aluminum heat tape on both sides of the heat shield. A couple of layers may be required to get rid of it entirely. You can remove the shield and test drive it to see if this is in fact the problem, but it is important that it is installed correctly due to its obvious function. Another source might be the heat shield for the catalytic converter, But that would be rare unless it's about to fall off. Hope this helps...Dave

I reply to the rattle threads because I am always looking for mine.

Mine rattles at 2000-2200 rpm only . It is on acceleration and with the clutch out . It goes away at about 2200 rpm. I have had the car on the lift three times to see if the heat shields or the hangers or something are loose and I cant find anything after shaking, bumping, and swearing trying to find it. It sure sounds like it is from the drivers side rear.

I am becoming convinced that the guts in the cat are some how " loose " from the housing and then only rattle at that rpm.

So look at that.

If you find yours then please post it up.

If you're complaining about rattles you need a louder exhaust or louder radio

Jk, hope you find/solve it.

I have one thats similar. I've traced it to the heat shield right above the cat. It happens when I take bumpy left turns and at idle/low rpm take off. My theory is that since the car has been running rich for quite some time, the cat is pulling an immense amount of heat and has slightly warped the shield. Having a bad-ish passenger engine mount doesn't help either, haha.

Or maybe its the PO's hack exhaust job

I've just learned to put of with rattles.

My subs have caused more rattling than the original culprits I've been trying to mask

Hopefully 2 more months and I can post my build thread

Sounds like the rattle I have on my 951. I had a Porsche specialist got thru everything when he was doing tb/wp but didn't find anything that caused the rattle. The cat seems like it could be the culprit though. I'll be replacing mine in a while so I'll let you know what happens when I do if nobody has any other answer before that.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. (This place is awesome) I figured it out. And turns out as 16valver put it. The PO had a poor exhaust job done. The Pipe snapped on me while I was driving causing the muffler to fly off on the expressway. Turns out however that the rattling was this bushing missing from the pipe's hanging rod. The constant movement Snapped the welding. Just got it all done yesterday for like 80 bucks. New Pipes and a new muffler. The owner of the shop felt that bad for me. Also, there was a redbull can used to stop an exhaust leak... What a fun 4 days it's been lol.

FTW!!!!! haha. Yeah its only a matter of time before mine will snap. It knocks against the heat shield AND up against the rear sway bar. I'll get it all re hung and re piped one of these days...
