AC blowing hot air
My 1991 944S2's air conditioner suddenly started blowing out very hot air last week. Here are the details:
Before: Fan speed 4, temperature set to 21 Celsius, air mix controls set to far left so all air comes out of middle dash vents.
After working for hours on a trip, all the air was suddenly very hot. Playing with the controls, I found a way to get somewhat
Now: With the same settings, I get hot air coming out of the middle dash vents. If I turn off the climate control and fan, I still get some very hot air coming out of the middle vents.
To get somewhat cool air out of the middle vents, I now need to set climate control on, the temperature set to the lowest setting, the air mix must be set to middle position so I'm getting air low, middle, and by the windshield.
That's the odd part. With the air mix set to only use the middle dash vents, it's hot. Move the two air mix sliders to the middle area, and the air gets colder.
Any ideas what might be wrong here?

There's a clip under the dash just above your right knee (US models) that breaks ans causes this to happen. Have a look. You may see the pieces on the floor mat... and there will be a screw tipped rod lying loose up there.
This is a dealer part and costs a buck or so.
Good Luck!

I agree with Skip that this is the most likely explanation. For a very good article describing the problem and solution with pictures, look for the November 2000 issue of Excellence (a Porsche magazine) for an article on just this problem.

Dude, I just went thourgh the same problem. It was a clip by the right knee, but I never would have known it if I hadn't stuck my head up there. Small round white clip. I have the afore mentioned copy of excellence. I'll scan the article and mail it to ya if you're interested.

The parts you want are 944-572-217-00 Heater Clip and 944-572-314-00 Heater support. Total cost about $1.20. You will probably have to feed the guy at Ramsey the parts # as I asked for these a couple of weeks ago and they couldn't figure out what I was takling about. I ordered them from Don McGill in Houston, and over the phone they knew exactly what I was referring to (same story with the infamous sunroof gears). I think if you check the archives and sites like 944 garage or Ken Gross' FAQ's may have the procedure. It is a common problem. I got the clip just to ward off the demons (too late for the sunroof though, I've got to replace the gears!) Good Luck and keep cool

By popular demand, there's a new page at Tech-session describing the heat clip issue... with pictures and part #'s.

S2 clips
Theres actually a black plastic cover on my S2 with a few 7mm or 8mm bolts (dont recall exact size now ) I removed with nut driver. Once cover is off there are 2 of these levers with little plastic thingys that can break. I bought 2 and replaced the one in the video. Other one seemed ok. The spare part now sits in a baggie in my console right next to my brand new spare DME relay. Been there for 5 years now. 👍. Cold AC ever since.
