Default cheap 944S2 on indy CL

anyone see this 944S2 for sale. looks like good project. I would have bought it had I not bought my other project.
http://tippecanoe.craigslist.org/cto/3222974160.html

For sale is a 1990 Porsche 944 s2 5-Speed. My father passed this car down to me and absolutely love it. This car is quick, real quick. The only problems that i can think if is it needs the starter shimmed (which is easy) and a windsheild wiper motor. It also has a small radiator leak. I just had a brand new clutch installed in it, it has less that 1000 miles on it. The car is near perfect on the inside. I have owned this car for 7 years and nobody has smoked in it. It has very little rust, VERY LITTLE. The car still runs and drives well! It's a great car and handles decent in winter! Price negotionable.

If you are interested, please contact me after 4pm.
(574)870-8294, My name is Steve.

Thanks for looking!!

Seats torn in 5-6 places per seat and he says he has no interior or engine pictures and can't send any out??? I guess that is "near perfect" in his twisted mind!

I bet you could pick this car up for $2700....the motor alone is worth that if it had to be parted but (at least in the pics) the body looks very straight....look at the panel gaps in the nose...I see no signs of any body mishaps.

with a new clutch already done....TB/WP/CT would be on the radar but at $2700 it would be a deal.

As I said...someone needs to pick this up !

Here's another well-priced S2:
http://bham.craigslist.org/cto/3244087901.html

Wonder how much more maintenance work an S2 would mean over my 8-valve n/a?
If both cars have recent belts, hoses, fluids; how many more hours is an S2 clutch install for example?
What other big cost differentials in going S2?
(Yes, I realize the Tippecanoe S2 has a new clutch already; asking for educational purposes)
Thanks as always for the collective brilliance of this forum's contributors.

Yup, it's $10,000 away from being a $5,000 car.

thank you.

i'm safely at the stage where i can spend $15 k ($3 k in the past week alone)

to keep my 968 engine running for the next 40 k miles.

not going to to do it. you reach a point where you do a few things where it's better to leave be.

hope the effin' timing belt breaks within the next three months so i can just be done with it.

Not you too Erik !

My car:

Purchased with 180k on the clock from another RL member who never registered it

Stupidly did not get a PPI and paid $5k

Since then I have spent on the order of about $12k on things ranging from clutch to new (old) trans to stub axles to all sorts of rubber, rotors, TB/CT/WP, fixing the ABS, AC, Dash cluster, etc

That was over the course of about 5 years.

All of this done at a shop since I have little time to self-perform.

It's now been 6+ years ago since I purchased and I now have 207k on the clock....car continues to run like a top (knocking wood) and I've done numerous track events and beat on the car (in a good way)...and it still runs like a champ.

Had I been smarter, I would not have purchased THIS S2 for $5k.......I would have either gotten a better deal or purchased another (and maybe spent $7k) and gotten a car that was closer to what I have now.

So YES...a $5k 944 can be a $15k car easily.

However that does not mean that every $5k 944 is in the sad state of repair that mine was in.

Fact is that S2's are fewer and fewer and are GREAT cars just like 968's.

If this one is in decent shape, has a recent clutch and can be had for just under $3k it may be a deal....depends on the car....and can be even more of a deal for someone willing to do some of their own work.

ps -

I imagine that even if I were to have purchased a used boxster or 996 (early) for my $17k investment that there would still have been maintenance over the 6+ years.

To summarize....all in, I have had 6+ years of combo weekend driver/ track toy for what amounts to $2800/year.

No difference between S2 and NA or turbo clutch install.....it got cheaper on the 968 by virtue of a different bell housing/torque tube arrangement...so you don't need to drop the transmission on a 968 as far as I understand it.

An S2 will have the chain tensioner to pay attention to....but that's an item you inspect/change out once you get the car and then you're good for a fair amount of time.

timing belt changes are about the same...

parts costs....with the exception of the items directly related to the 16v head...are also about the same.

The 3.0liter 4cyl motor that porsche put in the S2 and 968 is a very stout design....

OD will have to really work to blow his up....or be neglectful in terms of oil changes, belt inspections, etc.
