Rebuilt steering rack in Dallas/ Grapevine?
I bought a rack from Autozone and it has rust on the end of the rack, strategically placed to be dragged through the seal when I turn hard right... I'm taking it back, but I only have until next Monday before I leave. Does anybody have a convenient source for a rack down here? Autozone says this is the last one and they can't get another as their supplier is out.......

I bought a rebuilt from Zims recently - properly rebuilt and cleaned - looks like a new unit.
I have bought a rebuilt from ebay before - not even close to quality of Zims.

Griffiths is the only supplier I trust, other than Porsche. They do a very thorough and professional job of rebuild steering racks (etc.) and are not in business to be the cheapest. If you think about the consequences of a mechanical failure of your rebuilt steering rack, at speed, it clarifies things for me.

The great thing about Zims is they stand behind their products. If you have any issue with anything they sell as "remanufactured" you will get a replacement (they cover shipping) and send the old one back (again, they cover shipping). They will even analyse why the part failed and get back to you so you know what happened.
That being said. I have had only one time where I had to returnanything, and it was a waterpump. It began to weep slightly behind the pulley. New one, no fee, no questions. Gotta love that kind of support! I also have used their racks. Things look brand new.

No such luck - got here by the tender mercies of American Airlines. I called Zims and they have 4 in stock so tomorrow or the next day I'll go get one. Maybe I'll actually get to drive 'er again before the snow flies. Yay!
Thanks for all the help, guys! I was beginning to think this little adventure was going to get ugly. Now all I have to do is convince the airport guys it's really not an M16!

Ha! Pack it well and good luck at DFW. Plan on that being checked luggage.
Hope you're enjoying your stay down here. If you haven't had real Texas BBQ yet, you're in luck nearby. Check out Hard 8 BBQ in Coppell, next door to Grapevine, and don't forget to pick up some flavor of Shiner or St. Arnold's beer before you go!

I've been to Hard Eight and it took me 2 days to digest it! It was good - my mother once told me never to eat anything bigger than my head. Now I know why! The guy I was with had to pay $20 for his meal, just over a pound and a half of BBQ meats. Ate the whole thing.
I've taken quite a shine to Ziggy's Bock - I particularly like that my hotel has happy hour and all the drinks are free! Not only are my arteries congealing, my liver is on its knees.

I just got back from Zim's where a very friendly fellow took me on a tour of the facility; I bought a rack, got it back to the hotel and it is truly a thing of beauty. It really does look brand new. I'm hoping that when I get mine out of the car it won't be a total P.O.S. and I'll be able to get the core charge back. I can't imagine mine being anything as nice as this one - I gave some thought to putting it on my mantel piece instead of putting it on the car and getting it all grubby. Now to see if it leaks....

Been using Zims for the last 5 years and have never had a problem with any of their rebuilds. A couple dozen racks at least.

Ditto on Zims, never an issue with them and for me they shipped fast. Bought my rack rebuild kit from them and all the clutch parts. Next time I'll buy a rebuilt rack instead of doing it myself, wasnt hard it just seems I don't have time for things anymore......
