Default Price for head gasket replacement Chicago area?

I have a friend who purchased a 944 form me some time ago and it needs a head gasket. Trying to some idea of cost and if there is anyone in the Chicago land area that may be recommended or interested in doing the work?

Also I was wondering how difficult the HG job is ion a 944? I have done several HG repairs on other cars but no experience with the 944.

it also needs to be milled, new valve guides, and new stem seals, otherwise you are totally wasting time and money

not difficult per say. just time consuming. hell i managed to get mine emergency swapped in the paddocks in about 4-5 hours i think.

porsche shops...other than dealership. fallline, eurosport, fluid motor union are top tier shops. there's also a couple of others that i've heard of thru the grapevine but names don't come to mind.

there are a lot of us rennlisters in chicagoland that can do the job. just not sure who's all at a level that he'll trust. i'm in the hobby garage mechanic level def not a shop level.

I use Euroquipe in St. Charles for the work that I don't do.
But there are a number of other good places too in the Chicago area, Eurosport, Fischer's, Perfect Power, CPT

So it sounds like its on par with any other 4 cylinder HG job. How about the cost though? Any ideas what a shop would charge for the job?

Member 89-944NA on Pelican posted the 18.7 shop hours required here:

You might be lucky to find a shop that will charge $100 an hour.

I left out a "0"

Wow ... $1800. I would have guessed about half that time.

One little thing ... don't order your gasket till you or your macninist has measured the head and ya pretty much have to have it off to measure it. There are at least two different thicknesses and it would be good to have the right one....Bruce

If there is regular access to another car, this is something I would do in the evenings over the course of a week.

helloo!!!???.. no one read my post? you can't just pull the head off and put a new gasket and call it good on these cars. its like saying your heart has cancer and instead giving you a heart transplant and chemo to kill the cancer, were just going to scrape off the cancer and leave your heart there........... have the head checked for warpage, pressure test it, put new valve guides and stem seals, have the head milled if the head allows it, and then, install it with all new seals. or pull the head, put a new gasket, put the head back on, drive the car for a few more months, and then complain that your using oil and have no power after spending all that money. Just sayin...........

you just explained the Porsche 944 !!

and why these are such great cars !!

right up until the moment the headgasket goes, clutch fails, or the timing belt explodes....

and they're converted into epic ****boxes in the blink of an eye !

God bless you !!!
