The BMW was an e39 530i, 2001+ MY. He didn't have a problem keeping up, all of the NAs were so far down on power they were basically gutless.

The mustang was bought by a PCA member that was tired of trailering his car to Parade but still wanted a sporty car to drive so he bought a 2013 Mustang off of the lot.

Today we were scheduled for another drive through the mountains, the High Uinta drive. We slept in, missed the tour the tour and headed to Hill AFB and the AFB museum. Lots of awesome aircraft and an awesome time. Tomorrow is the Gimmick Rally that we will be doing with ModdedEverything951S, his wife and his 11 month old son. I hope we find everything.

We will be at the beer tasting tomorrow afternoon, The Parade of Porsches on Saturday and the Victory Banquet. Please come find us if you're in town!!!

Aaron,
Missed you again!
Saw the cars in the corral but you guys were not there.

We did the alpine tour today (you would have been parked near our group for the Uinta tour) and the canyon tour yesterday.

What time are you out for the gimmick??

We are schedule out at 0830, but we might be skipping the gimmick, I want to see PorscheG96 run the autocross with "blue bird".

PS There are two GP White 968's here, mine is the one with blue interior and body color wheels.

Hope to see you guys tomorrow!
Dave

Dave, we're scheduled out at 0830 as well. We will be taking Darwin's pickup because that's the only thing with enough room for all of us.

I don't know if you've done a gimmick rally before but they are loads of fun. Folks from our local region set this one up and it should promise to be a good one. I'll keep an eye out for your car and wave you down if I see you!

We did the gimmick in St Charles, they are fun. Still not sure if we're skipping it or not but we should be there to get the packet.

Leaving Snowbird now; car needs a bath!

We'll look for you.
Cheers,

Yesterday was the final day of the Porsche Parade and we started it off with the Parade of Porsches through downtown Salt Lake City. The 924/944/968/928 were grouped with the 356s and 914s at the front of the Parade followed by every variant of 911 and a lone Cayenne. Mother Nature did us a favor and cooled things down a bit but we would have appreciated a little (ok, a LOT) less rain. Either way, everyone took the set back in stride and we departed on time. Salt Lake City's finest provided a robust escort through the downtown area. I'm not entirely sure, but we may have had every off duty police officer providing escort or security.

As you can see, it was very wet and there were some very neat cars there. Of note is the red 968 cabriolet with a mere 46k miles on it. According to the owner, the top has only been down a handful of times. Also of note, Darwin managed to fairly severly injure himself on that car. He wasn't paying attention and walked into the exhaust pipe. Luckily, he didn't burn himself but he did manage to take a decent-sized chunk out of his leg. He found out the hard way that the 94/95 968s don't have rolled lip exhaust tips. Apparently budget cuts really can hurt.

Once we finally hit the road, we were nearly the first cars in line! There were 2 356s, 2 914s, a 924 and the red 968 cab in front of us. As you can see from the pictures, there was quite the parade!

The folks on the sidewalk definitely seemed to be into it but the drivers affected by the closed roads were pretty upset. I'm sure it didn't make them feel any better when they saw millions of dollars of Porsches going by at about 5mph. The entire parade took about 30 minutes and we stopped back at the original start point. At that point we paused for a few photos.

Then we headed back to Darwin's to get cleaned up for the Victory Banquet. We made it to the social hour fashionably late and the party was in full swing. I introduced Darwin to RJ Wilmoth, a PCA historian and long time 968 owner. We had a great time talking cars over local microbrews until the banquet hall opened up at 7pm sharp. As we took our seats and got to know the folks at our table, we noticed that they were showing a slideshow of pictures from the week. Imagine our surprise when our 951 and Darwin's 951 were shown in front of everyone!

We had a great time drinking, laughing and not//not winning a set of Michelin tires OR the trip to Germany. Better luck next year I guess. Speaking of next year, Parade will be in Traverse City, MI in 2013 and Monterrey, CA in 2014. Barring unforseen circumstances, we will be driving to Traverse City and possibly flying to Monterrey.

What a fun week!

Yesterday was the beginning of our trip back to the Washington DC area. We left Darwin's house a little after 0800 and hit the road toward I-80 and Salt Lake City. Humorously, as we gassed up right before getting onto I-80 I reset my trip odometer and the gear stripped out. I had replaced this gear a little over a year ago and I can assure everyone that I was at a dead stop. Luckily, the trip meter on my GPS still works just fine.

After a short trip on I-80 we got onto I-15S toward our first stop on this return trip in Moab, UT. We intentionally decided to drive a shorter distance starting our trip home to enjoy the absolutely beautiful countryside heading south through Utah and into New Mexico. As we headed south the sky continued to darken and finally the rain came. Initially the rain was light and mostly annoying but as we exited I-15 for Highway 6 toward Moab the rain picked up as we ascended into the mountains. Here are a few pics from my dash as we drove through the mountains:

As we drove through the beautiful mountains we were passed by a 997 Turbo S leaving Parade. How could we tell they were leaving Parade? They still had their Parade numbers on their car like we did! We were doing 3-5 mph over the speed limit and they passed us without even the slightest effort. At least I managed to get a good picture:

Once we cleared the mountain range the weather cleared up, the roads flattened out and our pace picked up. Still, the views were breathtaking:

And wouldn't you know it, we came across the largest miner in Utah:

After consulting our "Scenic Drives of America" book we decided to call an audible on our way to Moab and detour to UT-128 toward Moab. UT-128 is a 44 mile state road that generally follows the Colorado River and as you can see has some amazing views. We saw a 911 3.2 from Parade (still had the numbers!) with the same idea as us as well.

Suitably amazed with nature's beauty, we arrived at our hotel and checked-in. After talking about what we really wanted to see with the rest of our afternoon, we decided to do the short drive to Arches National Park. We saw a Boxster Spyder doing the same thing we were. And you know what? They were at Parade!

I don't have words for what we saw so I'll let our photos do the talking. I don't think that it's even possible to capture all of the beauty we saw today:

We had dinner at a local restaurant near our hotel and as we walked off the calories, we saw a Cayenne leaving Parade! It was entirely too humorous that every Porsche we saw today still had their numbers from Parade.

Looks like a cool time! We got to experence a bit of the tour ourselves. My wife and I were returning from a kayak trip along I80 Sunday and saw so many beautiful Porsches it was incredible! Looks like we might be looking at 2014 in Monterray for our trip! Glad you had a blast!

Wow this last group of pictures are unbelievable. This has been great to live this vicariously through you two. I can't wait to see the write up for the patter so that the members of the Chesapeake Region that are not on Rennlist can also enjoy it.

Yesterday we woke up in Albuquerque, NM and set out toward Oklahoma City, OK. The vast majority of I-40 between Albuquerque and Oklahoma City is part of the historic Route 66. You can still get off of the interstate in places and drive through towns that were on Route 66. In the interest of time we just stopped once but it was definitely worth it. Some of the PCAers from Maverick Region said they stayed at the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, NM (near the OK border) and we stopped there to gas up, find some breakfast and take in the sights. Tucumcari was pretty but it was also sad as well. The decay, the clinging to an age that the rest of the nation has moved past was heavier here than anywhere else we saw. It reminds me of Freemont Street in Las Vegas. Something about it just feels like the residents are still waiting for the Rat Pack to come back. That being said, Minta and I want to take a trip from LA to Chicago along Route 66 before all of this is gone.

We continued on through Texas and into Oklahoma. I'll tell ya, we didn't see much at all but it was good to spend a few hours back on Texas soil. Even if it was the panhandle, it was really hot and there wasn't much to do. We stopped at a roadside diner and curio shop for a late brunch. Neglected to take any pictures but suffice it to say that the proprietors were friendly, the bathrooms were mostly clean and the swag for sale was ridiculous. Oh, and we saw the largest cross in the Western Hemisphere. To our credit, we have managed to grab a shot of the "Welcome to..." sign from every state on our trip.

We stopped for the afternoon at the Hampton Inn near Tinker AFB, OK. We had called ahead to make a reservation on-base but were told that they were completely booked. Highly skeptical, I guess they were right when we met some Airmen staying at our hotel because Tinker was booked.

Today we were on the road, headed to Memphis, TN. Minta and I have been through Memphis many times but this is the first time we've ever stopped there for the night. The heat once we entered Arkansas was intense and it just kept getting hotter! I know that 944/968 AC systems aren't generally renown for their efficiency and we were definitely on the receiving end. As we neared 1200, we generally had a choice: continue driving at 70-75mph, turn on the AC or do both and risk overheating. We did a combination of the first two while avoiding the third. We arrived in Millington, TN (just outside of Memphis) feeling ready for a dip in a cool pool and some dinner. The cool pool was outside so it was luke warm and dinner was from the mexican food place in the parking lot of the hotel. We're more than a little worn out but none the worse for wear. I think the cars are in the same boat.
