Reading over the previous history, I think the po already did the conversion....Is this a common compressor? Can I just grab one a local auto parts store? Is the compressor different if it is already converted? And are there any good write ups to swab out the compressor? Clarks garage didn't have anything (unless I am just dumb....very possible)

IIRC, the denso compressor will work just fine. You need to add a couple oz of esther oil and a different dryer. Everyone I know who has done this has had the system professionally evacuated of R12.

If your low & high side charge ports are R134a spec, then it has been done

It doesn't pay to replace the whole compressor (400 bucks) and find out that it was the alternator bearing instead. There has to be a way to cheaply replace the bearing for the compressor just to rule it out. Sure it won't fix my ac, but it will make the car run smooth, right?

Measure the compressor to crank pulley length, and get a shorter belt...

That will either tell you it is the compressor making your noise, or tell you it ISN'T the compressor making the noise...

Should cost you about $12 to figure it out...

I am not talking about getting a new or rebuilt compressor, I am saying to get a cheap old working off ebay or the RL or Pelican parts wanted forums and swap it.

The compressor has to be the same one as yours. There is a plate on the compressor that will tell you something like "Nippondenso ...."

You have to have the same hose hookup for the AC hoses as well. The AC manifold must match.

No, there is not an easy way to buy and change the bearings on your old one.

The "V" shaped belt drives the power steering pump. The flat belt with ribs on the inside drives the alternator and a/c compressor. Both belts are driven from the CRANK PULLEY.

okay it's the ac. I put a shorter belt on there and got the sound. so I guess its gotta be the ac. seems strange that there is no way to pull the pulley off and repack the bearing.

Really only 2 options now...

AC Delete
New Compressor

Paragon has rebuilt Denso compressors for ~ $500, Conversion parts for ~$480, or AC Delete kit for $165...

how hard is the ax delete? I imagine it is just a part that replaces the wc with a tensioner pulley, no? since the ac is the part that moves to tension the belt...

Screw it. I will just order the rebuilt ac. I imagine it is best to grab a rebuilt one rather than the cheaper used ones, right? Also, is there anything else that I can do to really make sure this will fix the issue? I thought it was the turbo for sure, then the idler pulley for sure, now the ac for sure. not really feeling spending 400-500 bucks to find out it was yet again something else...

The clutch should spin, by hand. If it doesn't compressor is probably shot and causing the issue.

Try a hose or mechanic stethascope to here which is making the noise for sure.

Hello, it is possible to replace the bearing inside the ac clutch or you can repalce the clutch assem. and save a few dollars .. most of the 944 compressors are Nepondenso very common

This is for an '86...

Are you sure the clutch plate isn't dragging? If one of the straps that holds the plate is broken or weak, the plate will drag, making a god-awful noise, sort of like a brake that is worn out.
