Just a bump for a particularly useful thread- I did the 'Part I' refresh on my '84 last night, and holy crap the shifting is better. Still need to tweak the side-to-side position back on the shift linkage, as it's apparently drifted just a touch to the right over time- almost no clearance between the bolt and the side of the opening when in 5th or reverse, but there's plenty when I'm in 1st or 2nd.
Also, here's what happens when someone loses the 'circlip' that keeps the stock assembly together, then just leaves it that way for ages:

The washers that ride on the radial bearings do wear, make sure to check them and I would use a harder washer. Makes a big difference after 2 years of driving. I just replaced the washers on mine and they were trashed. Still, an easy fix!

Good to know! I'll add that to the future 'things to check' list... So much of an improvement as-is it's hard to complain, though.

I grease mine every 6 months or so, like new after 1.5 years. Probably a good idea to just order like 10 of the washers and keep them handy though I guess.

I switched to stainless washers for this round, the last set just ended up being very soft. That won't be a problem this time. I will lube more often though.

Just finished this task today after buying a much needed new Harbor Freight grinder for $11 and spending 20 minutes grinding and reattaching it all back together.
Part costs were a total of $17.98 shipped from McMaster-Carr,my shifter is very tight in gear and feels like it probably did 28 years ago when new.
Thanks Spencer!

Finished this mod today after my wife broke the pin and nursed the car home. Took $8 in parts, thanks for the tips. Now looking for the best option to replace the boot. thanks.

bolt/nut may be too long and require grinding.
or your shifter boot is in the way.
seems there is a lot of variance in the shifter hole size, as well as relative location of the transmission and shifter rod.
