1986 944 ignition switch problem
Hello everyone, I just joined this forum and I am hoping someone will be able to help me out with my small problem. I recently purchased a 1986 944 non turbo automatic car and I want to restore it back to its former glory. I noticed when I bought it that the ignition switch seemed very sloppy. Now when I start it up the key will not sping back and I am getting a loud clicking noise from under the hood, sounds like around the battery area. Can anyone advise me on what I need to replace, and how difficult it will be to complete and where is the best place to get the parts I need to repair. Any and all help will be much apppreciated. Thanks, twostwo

ernie gave great information as usual.
You probably need to replace the column ignition switch to get the key to return. Maybe try a shot of WD-40 lubricant or graphite in the cylinder first.
There is also a plastic connector under the ignition switch that cracks and should be replace.

To isolate the loud "clanking" sound you should get a cheap mechanics stethoscope at Harbor Freight.
It could be as simple as a couple of loose manifold bolts or as bad as a "dead" hydraulic cam follower (ie lifter).
The big problem with an automatic is the clutch "flex disc plate" repair cost ==about $1200 for the part alone and labor.
