Pulling fuel rail

Is it absolutely necessary to remove the fuel lines while doing this? I'm only removing it so I can take off the manifold and get to the parts beneath it. I don't know if there's enough wiggle room in there with them still attached, to just set it aside or leave it resting on the head after its been removed.

I've never removed my fuel lines when pulling the rail.

Ok. Clarksgarage says to, then I searched it here and read a bunch of horror stories about people having leaks afterwards and causing fires.

I re-did my cam tower, intake manifold, fuel injectors and other seals and never pulled the fuel lines.

No, you don't need to. Unbolt it from the manifold and cam box, then carefully pull it over and let it sit on the shock tower. I usually put some towels underneath it to take some of the stress off the lines.

Cool, thanks. One less thing to worry about now.

I think what you want to do is disconnect the fuel lines at the rail and leave the rail and injectors attached to the intake manifold. It's hard to get to one of the IM bolts, just need a ball-end metric hex or use a regular key and do it 1/4-turn at a time.

There's not much chance of a fire if you are paying attention. The horror stories you heard were likely about re-seating the injectors after pulling the rail and injectors off the IM.

You'll want the IM completely off so you can scrape the gaskets off it.

I changed my motor and never pulled the lines off the fuel rail. I just pull it with injectors in the rail and move it out of the way. It will flex enough.

This for a early car using a late style fuel rail.

Ditto.

I got the manifold off and the rail out without pulling the lines and kept the injectors in the rail. Very easy

Be careful with the injector seals unless you have new ones.
