Default What year/model P-car wheels fit a stock body '88 944na

So I've been doing searches and reading and I'm still unclear about some stuff.

1. What year(s) and model(s) Porsche cars wheels fit a stock body 1988 944 NA? (I assume that if it fits a stock body P-car then it'll fit my '88, correct?)

For example, wheels on an '89 911 carrera targa will fit but those from an '89 911 carrera targa wide body, 930, or 935 will not.

2. My '88 is considered a "late body" 944 correct?

Stock you have 7J15 phonedials with the 52.3ET late offset with the standard Porsche bolt pattern of 5x130. That means all Fuchs (911 66-89) will not work. You will be able to fit 8" wide rims on the rear.

Some wheels that will work:
7J16 front 8J16 rear late offset "phonedials" from an 87 or 88 951 (non S)
7J16 turbo-twists from an early boxster
7J16 front 8J16 rear D90's from a 944S2, 964, 928
7J16 front 8J16 rear Cup II's from a 968 or 964

2. Your 88 944 NA is considered "late offset". That means you have the 1987+ 52.3ET offset versus the 23.3ET offset of the 83-86 cars. The change was made to provide the suspension geometry required to make ABS work. Even if your car doesn't have ABS it will still have the late offset.

Thank you for the clarification and information Jackson, clearly you have some knowledge to share!

Is it safe to say that any aftermarket wheel on a 968, 944S2, 928, 951 ('87/'88 only) and non wide body 964 will also fit?

I also saw some 944's running Cayenne (or was it a Cayman) wheels. However, I'm not sure if that was on a 944S. Is that another option?

Veleno, in general that is a safe statement, but is best to know the specific offsets and widths to avoid disappointment after purchase.

I know this is somewhat confusing at first. With just a few helpful sites and figuring out the rennlist search page, all will become clear… seriously 99.9% of all wheel questions have been answered by now.

With that said, check post #8 on this thread, The Official 924/44/68 Wheel Thread . My car is about maxed out for rear wheel fitment, 18x11et63 and the front wheels with spacer equal 18x8et45 which is about the max offset for an 8” wide wheel. One more important factor to remember is my car is an ’89 turbo, the rear quarters are rolled allowing almost 10mm more outside clearance. This is true of all ’88 Turbo S and ’89 Turbo cars.

The three links in that post first show most Porsche wheel offerings, second a calculator to help you physically verify fitment compared to your original wheel offsets, and the third will help with tire size selection.

Simply any 8” et50 range will work out front and the rear will take a 10” et65. Plug the numbers into the calculator and go measure what is on your car to know what is possible.

Good day and good luck!

17" Cayenne wheels will fit with spacers and, IMHO, look sharp as hell. Cheap, too!

Edit: Found a post with pic in the above recommended wheels thread:

Be careful with that -- I bought my 944 (now spec car) from a guy who stuffed some really wide wheels under the car. In the process of converting the car to a race car, I found that the ride height was all jacked up and the front fenders were slightly rolled in order to make them fit. Not to mention that there was evidence of rubbing in the rear, despite the changes made to the suspension by the PO. But I take it that you want to stick with something classier than the BBS knock-offs that the PO had, so you should be fine!

BTW 944S has the same body/suspension has your car (late) so if you are looking at anything that was taken off of a 944S, it *should* fit.

These '02 Boxster S wheels fit well on my late offset car... although I did have to use a narrow spacer up front to clear the bearing dust covers in the hubs.

Nice pictures guys.

Are there wider D90 wheels that fit on our cars?

Dillon, what kind of wheels are those on your project picture?

Porsche Cayman 17" wheels w/1/4" spacer on front. The stock tire on the rear caused a slight rubbing on left rear fender lip when aggressive cornering under acceleration. Tire Rack tire comparison charts allowed me to find a tire that was 1/8" narrower and eliminated the problem. Used same charts to find tire that had the proper diameter so the speedo was accurate and good reviews.
