Turn Signals stay on steady - no flash

I've got a 91 S2 as a DD, and recently the turn signals stopped working. When you turn on either left or right, they will illuminate front & rear, but not flash. If I turn the hazards on, they flash normally.

This was a gradual decline to where I am now. About two months ago, I noticed when I was first leaving home or work, the left side blinker was not flashing as fast as it used to the first or second time I used it. Just an occasional thing. Then I let the car sit for 2 weeks while I was out of town, and then they didn't flash at all. After driving the car for about 10 days straight, they would occasionally operate normally, but the flashing intervals were slowed than before - the longer the drive time, the more likely they would start working. Then I went to SEMA last week, car sat at the airport for 4 days, and now I'm back to no flashing. Hazard function still works normally.

I would think the flasher relay, but since the hazards work, I'm wondering if the switch/lever is bad? Car has 148k on it.

Anyone had a similar situation?

thanks

I'd guess flasher relay, grounds, or (in my case) faulty hazard switch.

funny - my s2 did this to me yesterday. as it's temp related apparently, I am still going with relay or switch. either way - it's a flipping ground issue. It's never fun diagnosing anything in the cold.. lol

Sounds like the Hazard Switch. If it were the relay the hazards wouldn't be flashing. I highly doubt a ground would go bad sitting for 4 days, 10 days etc.

thanks fellows - I'll try swapping the hazard switch and see if that solves the issue

Mine did that after the front bulb bunrt out,

My guess would be the relay. Mine was acting funny so I decided to put 12v right off the battery into each of the terminals(don't ask me why). That killed it pretty good, just like yours, but the hazard switch still made it flash

ELLSSUU 11-11-2011 07:41 PM

Mine used to do that. It was the turn stalk unit.

Just swapped in a spare hazard switch, no change in the issue, so I agree with you. Time for a combination switch

thanks everyone!

since your car is acting as it should if the key was off(solid parking light, flashing emerg lights), but doing it while the key is on, it may be the stalk, or the 12v that comes in while running to excite the relay. I don't have a 944 with me today, and don't remember off the top of my head where to check, but when I get to the shop I'll find a test point for that on the car for you.

Mine was the result of a blown bulb.

wesmc3 11-17-2011 07:48 PM

I am assuming Jim checked all the bulbs :-)

If you tried the hazard switch and nothing, I would get a new flasher relay.

Just replaced mine a few months ago - granted, my hazards were solid yellow as well, but it's a cheap enough item to give it a try.

Good news! I have functional turn signals now, but it wasn't as straightforward as I would have expected. I replaced the combination switch (thanks Sunset) and once everything was buttoned back up, the turn signals still did not flash, but now neither did hazards. Sooo - checked everything again, and pulled the relay; appeared to be the original, so got a spare (thanks RennsportKC) and now I have turn signals!

the new levers for the signals, wipers, & cruise are just wonderful - nice & tight, almost like having a new car :)
