944/VW Torsion bar interchangeability...
I'm looking for some new, larger Torsion bars for my 944. I found a set on a site called cip1.ca. They list a set of VW 28mm 26 9/16 long Torsion bars for 1/2 the cost of a set of torsion bars with the same part number specified for the 944. Think they're the same? A torsion bar of the same size should be the same spring rate, right?
The ones listed are an upgrade for a VW dune buggy. I can't imagine they are any different?
On sway-a-way's website, the VW and the 944 have the exact same part number for 28mm Torsion bars. This should all add up to me saving 150$, but only if they work. I don't think the cip1 T-bars are sway-a-way, but I don't know who else makes them.
here's the listing:

Thoughts?

After looking at a VW dune buggy and noticing it looked exactly like my early steel 944 rear suspension... I'd say you're fine taking a small risk on those bars.
If I had to put money on it I'd say they are the exact same thing.

Darren, the bars are Cip1 are EMPI, not Sway A Way. They will work, but remember all new bars take a "set" after they are broken in and the car will lower itself, so set them accordingly.
The 924 used Super Beetle rear suspension. The spring plates, and end caps have been changed a little.

Hi,
Yes, I did end up installing these bars. I love them. I also installed the Weltmeister poly bushings at the same time. The car is VERY stiff. However the ride is fantastic and the handling is even better.
My brother installed the equivalent size hollow sway-a-way torsion bars and elephant racing poly bronze bushings and his car is much softer. I'm not sure if the CIP1 bars are just stiffer, but they sure feel like it in the car.
I matched the bars with a set of koni yellows out back and a set of koni yellows up froint with GC coilover sleeves and 300# springs and the car is fantastic. Very, very well damped and a blast to drive.
the CIP bars were $175 shipped to my door in Toronto Canada and worth every penny.
I also would like to note that I seriously dreaded installing the torsion bars but after using the Elephant racing tutorial, it was actually very easy. I did them by myself in an afternoon. The hardest/worst part was burning off the old T-bar bushing.
Here are some pics of the install. I tried to clean and sandblast everything.
The result is nice flat cornering and very predictable handling:

Awesome, here is a good price on 30mm as well. http://www.pacificcustoms.com/AC501302-30.html
What damping are you running with those springs? I.E. Full stiff, 70% etc?

I run the Koni's at 1/4 turn off full stiff. I have tried playing around with the front. For AutoX I have tried full soft to full stiff on the front and found the car rotates a bit better at full soft in the front. depending on what track I'm at dictates how much rotation I want. At Mosport I run full stiff in the front, at a smaller track I play with it to achieve the desired rotation. The rears are a bit of a pain to change so I leave them at just below full stiff.

well damn, i forgot about this thread. what would be a good neutral front spring rate to match 26mm bars? To go with 26.8mm and 18mm sways,.
