Today, I had a spontaneous issue with shifting into first. It felt blocked, or as though the shifter was far enough for it to be in first, but the transmission was not engaged. I was able to shift into second, and after running it through the car wash and driving a few blocks, I was again able to use first. It is extremely difficult to get into gears 1 and 2 now, and the amount of play has increased in all four directions by perhaps a quarter inch. The car has had grinding first and second gears since purchase, but it got very bad today. Am I looking at bad synchros, transmission, bearings, or clutch?

Bolt securing the linkage to the shift rod... located above the transaxle inside a rubber boot... jack teh drivers side rear off the ground, and you should be able to see it.. pull back the rubber boot and I am willing to bet the bolt has worked itself loose... tighten it back up (making sure it locates into the detent in teh linkage), and all should be right again!
Safety wire the bolt in place to make sure it doesn't back out again!
Here is a picture of the linkage on the trans and the rubber boot!

+2 on the above. you may also want to pull the shift ****/boot off and remove the shifter from the trans tunnel. inspect the shifter and ensure the horizontal boss on the side that slides through the shift rod has not begun to turn itself into an hour glass shaped piece of cylindrical metal. secondly, inspect the shift rod where the horizontal boss slides through and ensure it isn't wallowed out, causing slop and indirect shift feel and placement.
