Default 968 ducted oil cooler. Worthwhile upgrade?

I want to increase oil cooling so that I may run longer sessions on track. Is the 968 oil cooler an easy install on the 951? If I can get a cheap cooler and filter housing I might go for an original system. If not I'm considering getting an aftermarket cooler in the same dimensions and getting the needed hoses and adapters to make it fit.

Will a 968 sized cooler be enough to safely run extended sessions on track?
Do you think the larger cooler will interfere with brake cooling (I have 968 brake ducting)?
Are there any drawbacks to increasing oil cooler size?

IMO best aftermarket options:

Under $500: http://www.lindseyracing.com/LR/Parts/944OILKISS.html
Over $500: http://www.lindseyracing.com/LR/Parts/944LROILCOOL.html

I'd say the best cheap option is the RX7 oil cooler... I plan on doing this in the future. I'd imagine, if you can find a good cooler at a boneyard, and shop around on the lines and fittings, I'd say it's probably pretty easy to get it done for <$200

Here is a good thread on the procedure.

Thanks, but there are hardly any sports cars over here and finding an RX7 cooler and sourcing the parts will be tedious and expensive to get from abroad.

If anyone knows of any sources for RX7 or 968 coolers I would love to know. I'm still hoping someone has the dimensions of the coolers in case I have to go aftermarket route.

If you can find the oil cooler off an early 80s Mercedes 300D/SD diesel, they are about twice the size of the 951 cooler. Those should be abundant in your part of the world. I have one on my car and after a long drive in hot southern California, the input side of the cooler is scorching hot and the output side is cool to touch, and only about 2/3 of the cooler is exposed to fresh air behind my bumper...you would just need to have some lines made. It will mount to the body below the bumper bar.

I went the RX7 cooler (late model) route and fabbed it myself for about $500 total. That included a brand new cooler itself with oil lines and fittings. I had a machine shop weld on 12AN bungs and got a the 24mm to 12AN converter pieces made. A few of the 964 guys make stuff like this.

Looks good.
Why do you all convert from metric to AN and back to metric. Would it not be simpler to go metric all the way?

I couldn't find aeroquip fittings in metric so, go figure.

That would be too simple. SAE goes back a long way, decades of North American manufactures.. full metric won't happen soon. It's too bad.

Spend 4x to buy a metric fitting from BAT.

use JIC and pay half what youd pay for AN...

or go standard hydraulic fittings (like on a CAT) like i did. i got a 2' and a 4' section of -10 stainless teflon hose, with hydraulic fittings and an adapter to the 951 oil console, and the mercedes cooler fittings crimped together for $30 out the door at a metric hydraulic shop here...

Sounds good. Labour is expencive over here. Two hoses crimped and ready would probably be $200 from a hydraulics shop, but I know have an insider in one of the major shops. I'm looking forward to finding out what he can come up with.

Is not the RX7 inlets smaller than on 944 the turbo oil cooler? Would not going down in diameter restrict oil flow and cause a pressure drop after the radiator?

The company I used is a German company called Hatech. You should be able to find them around.

RX7 inlets are about the same size. The 951 cooler has HUGE fittings but the holes aren't really that big. What some people do is modify the RX7 tank to accept -10 or -12 fittings.

And barrelroll, when you're on a budget you go to great lengths to find functional solutions for low-investment...the most expensive part of my external oil cooler setup was the 951 oil console.

You can also try an oil cooler from a 993. Same fittings as 951. 3 of us have this on our cars down here. You need a little bit of fab work to make them fit but nothing too difficult. Don't think I have photos but shall look around.

I'm getting back to this topic as I'm getting ready to drop the engine and the oil cooler is right in my face. Is there such a thing as a too big oil cooler?
