Default Window switch mounting fix

Here is what I have:

The 2 screw points on the door panel are shot. I have tried and tried to come up with a simple way to fix this so it is solid and looks like factory.

Anyone else had this and had a fix? The entire door panel is in perfect shape, just not the screw points for the switch.

I think this problem exists in a lot of 944s on the drivers side. Both mine have it. On one of them I was able to put some duct tape over where the front hole is ( a few layers), put the original screw-clip over that, poke a hole through it, and screw into that, and it works ok. still not quite like the passengers side though

What you need are acouple of Clip Nuts or J - Nuts found at McMaster-Carr.

may be time to pull door panel and figure out a fix with epoxy and maybe plastic.
I am guessing the mounts for the j clips are ripped out.

I bent a piece of brass over (must bend over both sides) the screw holes and drilled a small hole to run the screw through. Worked great.

I figured I could not be alone in this venture. I gave it some thought today. What do you guys think about getting a piece of metal and cutting it into a long C shape to run under the switch panel but sit flush with the back of the door card. Drill 2 holes. add 2 j nuts and screw it in?

I am going to give this a try and will post my results.

I cut out piece of thin hard plastic (I forget what it was from) that I glued behind the panel there and used clips like the ones linked to above to repair it... worked great, holding fine for months now.

I epoxied a piece of wood to the back and used that for a while, but it isn't reusable, say when you have to take the door panel off a month later to repair a broken door handle linkage... Now I'm back to square one, but with an epoxied chunk of wood in the way.

This weekend I'll try using a random piece of sheet metal to make a clip, or possibly go with a captive nut and then bolt it up.

Wow, just took a pic of the same spot 2 days ago, same problem !

I'm thinking of glueing plastic in place on the back side and attaching the metal clip back on. I don't really have much material left where the screw goes through.

I just had both door card off and should have taken pictures.

My passenger's side was a disaster. Not only were the corners that the window switch plate screws go into shot, but the top of the handle had pulled through.

I ended up laying up a few square inches of fiberglass over the entire area and re-drilling the handle hole. A bit of minor shaping on the corners and another drill hole and I'm back in business. We'll see how long it lasts. I made sure to put a decent amount of resin on the area first before laying up the glass, hoping it would soak/bond to the fiberboard better.

It all feels solid for now.

Fortunately, I have only lost one of my mounts but I would do the same thing for the second one when it goes. It was the front mount so I simply took the metal clip that the screw goes in to, moved it up front on the vertical part of the opening and drilled a small hole in the plastic piece for the screw. Then, I just rescrewed it from the front and now it is solidly mounted. The bad news is that if you look closely enough you can see the black screw head but I never even notice it when the door is closed.

BB.

I figured I would get the phone book when I asked this question. Lots of different methods.
