Moving to SF area, Tips??
 

I recently moved to San Francisco for the Academy of Art University (CAR DESIGN!!!!!), and was thinking if its a good idea to bring my 83 944 out here from Florida? If so then what would be some tips and info that I would need to know? I hope to bring my car out here one day but it needs to be completely finished first
(what would be good to change beforehand?)

You really don't need a car in San Francisco. You need a good pair of shoes.

How expensive it will be to keep will depend on where you will be living. It is also miserable to drive a stick between the hills and the traffic.

Also, everyone I know out there has had a car broken into or outright stolen. One guy at my SF office has had his truck stolen and recovered twice.

Edit: get a zipcar subscription if you need a car occasionally. Its going to end up being a lot cheaper.

If you really think you'll have time to take it out and drive recreationally, get yourself settled first, find a good secure place to keep it, and hope you aren't wrong about your college workload.

Don't...... Everyone is trying to get out of this state, why anyone would want to move in I just can't wrap my head around. Just don't bring your car, you'll be subject to smog, registration, and parking meters. Use public transit and save your car for when you go back.

Living in the area myself, I have to agree with the above statements, as much as I would love to see another RL member even nearer with their car. But regardless. Zipcar is a really great option, and public transit, I.E. muni/caltrans/BART can take you anywhere you need to go. Your car would be beat to hell and back if you tried driving around here. I had a '79 924 that was broken into twice before it got totalled by a drunk driver hitting it outside my home. But back to the point, public transit really is the way to go.

+1000000000 the 944 doesnt have enough balls to make it up the SF hills from a stop. last time i was in the city i was fortunate to be going uphill at a light traffic hour...rolling stopsigns and never stopping is the key. if you start to roll backwards...youre going into the pacific.

Come on man - really? I enjoy taking my car some time to the city for a spin - and never had this type of problems (although sometime people behind me do get scared :) )
But I do agree with everybody here: to go for a ride in a city on a sunny day it's one thing, but to take it there as a daily driver - NO WAY!!!
Oh yea, and one more thing - the roads in SF are the worst.

But sure does not sound like the kind of place you want a car to be if you care about it.

Now depending on how long you will be there etc maybe an alternative???

Leave the 944 in the promiss land for now, and buy a beater (944 or 924) for SF use out there? Get min insurance etc and use it as a temp car for while your there to occasionally have fun in. When your ready to move on try to get some of you money back out of it. Are you considering driving you 944 out there or shipping it?

Ok, it can actually make it up the hills, but you will be riding your clutch so much that it'll burn out reeaaaally quick.

If I lived in SF I'd get a 4wd diesel truck with super low gearing and a trans brake, to get around the hills no problem and to piss off the communists/hippies :to_order:

Ill be here for 4 years and can only make it back to Florida for the winter for a short time, I love the car and wish to go around in it every once in a while, not exactly a DD but a weekend getaway car.

There are some great driving roads down the penninsula if you can avoid the bicycle gangs and squids, ala Skyline rd down to Alice's Restaurant. There is a huge anti-car sentiment in "the city" I worked at a dealer in Burlingame and we got 10-15 vandalized cars a week from SF, one of my own cars was keyed down both sides when brand new, still had paper plates. If I were forced to live there, I would store the car in a storage facility in the east bay (cheapest area) if you can find a secure one near a BART station. That way you can take the train to your car when you want to drive it, take public transport the rest of the time and avoid the conflicts/damage.


OH and when in the bars and looking at a good looking girl, look at the hands and for an adam's apple. One of my friends got a suprise.:nono:
