Thanks for all the advice guys I find that the best advice comes from those 'sitting in the cockpit.' I plan to use this as a DD. I LOVE speed and power and many have mentioned that the 951 is fast, which is why I wanted to check it out. I would love to track, but don't have the money right now. I don't mind working under the hood, but it is not my first love. I am disappointed to hear about the engine problems with the 997's - had been looking at the 996's but they have RMS and IMS problems. So, what to do?

I laugh, not all people who own 944's are too poor to afford 997, TT...
Get a 997 or better yet a 993 since you must have some concern about reliability. You will have a hard time getting into a good 944 turbo because most of them have been purchased by people who could not afford to get their car taken car of properly so more than likely you will end up with something rigged to start with then the cost of modification, ... 997 will be cheaper. If you have the good fortune to get into very clean 944 turbo or even a clean one that has been modified that's a different story.

I'll disagree with the "if I had more money, I'd be in a 997." Certainly true and understandable for many, but for me, driving on public roads at realistic speeds, I find older cars much more engaging. They're also less flashy and have more character. I like the drive, I hate the attention and perception that comes from driving a high-dollar vehicle. I feel a bit silly in my bright red 951, but I would feel like a complete douche in a bright red 997. Call me self-conscious, if you will. I guess I am.
If I had $100k that HAD to be spent on cars, it would go to a caterham, a subaru outback, a chevy colorado (motorcycle hauler) and enough garage space to park them next to my 951.

If you don't have the money for the track, are you sure you have the money for a 997? The $30k difference between that and a 951 will buy you a lot of track time, tires, and mechanical work.

The sad thing is, I think it is true that 99% of 944 owners would own a newer Porsche, if they could afford it. I love my car like a fat kid loves cake..... but if I could afford a Panamera turbo, or a GT2RS, I would have one. However, I don't think I would give up my 944 for any other Porsche than the 2 I mentioned. Though, if I had the money for a Panamera turbo, then I could afford to keep my 944
944s are a sickness. No person in their right mind would own one. The maintenance costs FAR out weigh the value of the car, and just about any modification you do to it is worthless for resale value. You could put $40k into one, and couldn't sell it tomorrow for $12k (I'm exaggerating, but I don't think by much). They aren't "classic". They don't pick up chicks (I doubt you care about that ). They don't draw anywhere near the crowd that any other "sports car" does.... If you have a 944, you do it for only 1 reason, you love it. You have to have a passion for them.

no, that's about right. it'll be close to $80 k by the time i'm done.
tell me if i'm off on this estimate about a 1995 993 vs an equally well equipped 1995 968.... buy the 993 for $70 K and drive it 85 k miles. sell it for $38 k now. (add about $6 k for maintenance).... buy 968 coupe (base price $43 k) and 3 options; limited slip, all leather interior and 993 seats (the all-leather seat option) = $52 k (ests)... drive it 85 k miles. sell it for $14 K. (add about $8 k for maintenance)....
cost to own 1995 993 and drive 85 k miles = $38 k
cost to own 1995 968 and drive 85 k miles = $46 k
did i miss something ?

the only problem i see with that logic alan is that youre buying a sportscar with the intent of selling it someday...that seems silly IMO.
whichever of those cars i bought, i would drive it hard until it blew up or the wheels fell off...resale value is pointless to me...the true value of the car is the enjoyment you get while owning it...

That said, I think a warranty is a good thing. New cars have the warranty, as do CPO (Certified Pre Owned).

Karen England ___,please do yourself a favor go test drive a well sort out 968 ,93 to 95.Try to spend a little time behind the wheel in different driving conditions.You migth find out that what they call (the forgotten Porsche) is one of the most predictable & pleasurable one to drive around on a day to day basis.Talking experience here having driven most P cars for a long time including 951/ 996/boxster/928S4.The 968 is not a car that shout at you with huge spoiler-out of this world accelaration ,what it does very well is deliver the goods when you need it.
