Post while doing rod bearings.. what else?

i've got a leak in my oil pan gasket, so while it's off i'm going to have the rod bearings done (145k miles on an 86 turbo) is there anything else i should have done while it's all apart? main bearings perhaps? is that overkill?

Rod bearings are easy to change... main bearings will be more involved since the crankshaft needs to come out. That means taking out the oil pump, belts, etc... a bit more work if everything else is fine...

I would get the updated baffle for the oil pan, get the gaskets for both oil pick up and return tubes. I would also change the oil cooler o-rings at this time too.

I thought doing the mains was overkill too, but after doing the rod bearings my problem wasn't fixed. Now my engine is out of the car for a rebuild (mains included). Chances are that its only your rod bearings that are bad, but I am now essentially doing this job for the second time because I took the same chance. YMMV!

They will tell an interesting story. My bet will be that #2 shows some scoring. Mine were that way after 139k miles and mucho track days. Assuming the crank measures fine, it's really cheap insurance (the gasket will cost more than the bearing set!).

If you're tracking, plan on rod bearing replacement about every 60 hours of track time (street miles/time don't really count). Rod bearings require new nuts on assembly. There is a throrough write up on the Paragon Products Tech Session web site.

I am sadistic and enjoy the pain (financial). I would put it on an engine stand and replace the mains/rings/belts/etc. That way it is fresh and ready for another stint of life. Many will quote the many mega miles they have gotten from a motor, if I didn't own it from new, I would say anything over a 100k is a gift and just start from scratch.

Just my $.02
