It has been compressed and heated for 1000 miles of driving. Normally, used gaskets are replaced for a reason...

If it's not removed....will it cause a problem with priming the oil pump? Can the filter be removed and re-installed?

BlackOp you should be fine to reuse the filter. If you remove it and reinstall it treat it as if it were a new filter. Oil the gasket and so forth. I normally presoak the filter with oil on a new one, you can skip that step on this one!

i wouldn't even remove the filter, just drain the oil and refill. also run 20w-50 brad penn year round but my car doesn't see much winter action...except for the occasional nice day.

My bad. I was assuming it would be removed to drain out the previous oil in it. If not, no worries.

do you notice lifter noise if you use 20w in the winter? Or is it too hard to start?

If the car starts up with no lifter noise, don't bother changing - there is a film of oil already on everything that needs it. Bearings are all lubricated, and so is the cylinder wall.

If the car uses oil, then gradually top it up with a 0w or 5w something, but I wouldn't waste the oil you just put in it.
