Changing Trans Fluid The Easy Way With Pictures!
 

I was installing my short shift kit yesterday and decided to also change the transmission fluid. I went with Redline WT-90 from Paragon products. I bought 3 quarts and only used about 2.3 quarts.

Tools Needed:
-19mm socket and wrench to remove wheels.
-3 foot hose, decent side (1/2"-3/4") and a funnel and a magnet.
-jack/ jackstands
-17mm hex socket
-torque wrench

Steps:

1. Jack rear of car up (I use the trans as I have a solid trans mount) and place jack stands under rear suspension mounts or rear light points. It helps to have the drive side slightly lower than the passenger side to help the old trans fluid come out.

2. Remove drivers rear wheel/tire.

3. First make sure you can loosen the fill plug using the 17mm hex socket, then loosen the drain plug and drain the trans. I let it sit for about 10 minutes.

4. Now replace the drain plug and torque it to 18ft-lbs.

5. Use a hose that is about 3 feet long (about 1 meter) and have the funnel pressed into one end. Put the other end in the fill hole and tape the funnel to a strong magnet and put that on the quarter panel. (Look at the pictures below) This made it very easy to fill the trans.

6.The trans fluid should be filled so that it is 6-8mm below the fill hole. Most people fill it all the way which is okay too.

7. install wheel, torque to 80 ft-lbs, and lower can from jack stands.

May have to switch to the funnel method as it seems alot easier on the ol arms :)

It can be done without removing the wheel. Just use a longer piece of hose. I have done it that way the last two times I changed it.

I just attach a clear hose to the bottle of gear lube. Flip upside down, punch a small hole in the bottom with a small screwdriver. Put the air hose up to the hole, open the trigger to slowly let air in. Empties a bottle in about 10 seconds. You can be under the car, on top of it, or to the side of it, it doesn't matter.

I still keep thinking about welding up a metal container bottle with air hookup and a hose to do the job. Pour in however much fluid you need to put in the tranny, attach hoses, open regulator, watch gear lube shoot into tranny.

Pure genius!

Just make sure to kind of cup the hose connection at the bottle so it doesn't shoot off. I need to find a good sturdy gallon container to make more of a permanent solution.

Doc, I like your ideas! How about a gallon jug of oil with two holes drilled in the cap, one for a long hose to the tranny, and one for compressed air?

I think I'd go with a gas can for the pressure--they're a lot heavier duty than the throwaway oil bottles.

you read my mind! its the simplest things like that, that are commonly overlooked and because we overlook them, we make the task much harder than it needs to be!
