Default Complete 1983 944 DIY Repaint Write-up

So I love Rennlist, and I love Pelican, and I love Clarks-garage.com But none of them have been able to yield anything like a decent write up on repainting a 944. My old 1983 had a pretty ugly paint job. Ie, the metallic silver paint had degraded enough to be commonly mistaken for gray primer.

Anyway, I decided to take the DIY Repaint in the garage approach, and keep it under a $1000 budget. I've been tracking the results in a blog I started to track the effort. I've made extra efforts to write down parts and quanities used so that another 944 owner can better gauge how much time and materials it would take to perform a similar overhaul. I've also been tracking hours spent on each phase of the project.

I just finished the whole project this week, and I'm in the process of uploading all the pictures and info to the blog as I get extra time.

It is not meant to teach you how to paint a car, but hopefully it can be of use to some of you out there that are going to need to redo your 944 paint over the next few years.

Disclaimer: I'm not a pro. I'm not getting any endorsements from anyone for any of my efforts. Just trying to pass along some knowledge.

I notice you keep refering to aluminum, the 944's are not aluminum bodies, they are steel that are then galvanized. The sunroof is fiberglass.

Good job so far though! looking forward to seeing the finished project.

you are doing a good job so far. Looks like you went alittle overboard w/ the guide coat. Just remember the prep work makes the paint job. If you have dust in your primer you have dust in your paint. If you dont prep something right it shows through the finished product.

Very cool, and thanks for sharing. Painting a car, like transmission work, has always been an area that I've considered best left to a professional. That will remain the case with most of my cars, but this makes me want to take a stab at painting a project car at some point.

Thanks!

very nice work bro, if you ever want good paint and don't mind it not being factory colors paintforcars.com is great. Can't beat the prices, lays down great and get your stuff in around 2 weeks. Quality of the paint is worth way way more than you pay.

Default Not aluminjm

Aronimus - Man, I don't know where I got to thinking this car had an aluminum body. Thanks for correcting me. I hope I didn't screw things up too much in the early stages treating the steel like aluminum!!

Color pics should be up this weekend. I'm always torn between finishing the car, or updating the blog.

I love progress post's. Painting your own car would be a lot of fun.
