I never race on the street. In fact, most of my freinds say stuff like, "man, you have way too much self control." or " you drive like a grandpa ".

So, of course, the first time I did (sort of) I was pulled over and ticketed.

I will never race on the street again.

No street racing here. Don't want to die (yet), don't wanna go to jail.

Gonna do some DE and track time and so forth this summer if I can get my act together... legal and safe(r).

Since you started the thread... how about you? Certainly you must have at least one story... or are you hoping to live vicariously through others on this list as they take chances with their personal safety and freedom?

turby, It sounds like you want some stories, I have never raced anyone head to head but i do enjoy pushing my car. when I was at my first college I would enjoy seeing how fast I could go around a turning circle(like in Europe to keep the trafic flowing) as I got confident I went faster. the fastest I went was 60 and the back tires started to skip out from the circle, kind of scary but I got it under control. there was too much road dirt on the asphalt and i had ****ty road tires. I cant wait to try it with my new AVS intermediates I am having put on tommorow!
Ok turby let us know about some of your stories, you have to have some great ones!

OK, its lame, but you asked. Last fall I went to watch a friend race his car at New England Dragway. While waiting in the staging area for the mist to clear up, this guy was bouncing his brand new WRX off the rev limiter. About a week later I was driving up route 1 with my wife in the 944. I could see him coming in the rear view mirror and said to my wife "Hey remember that guy with the Yellow WRX... <img src="graemlins/a_smil17.gif" border="0" alt="[blabla]" /> . Anyway the light we were apporaching goes red and my wife says "Don't even think about it" To late. Its a forty MPH zone and I gave up after about 50 MPH, but he only had me by about 2-3 car lengths. Much better than I thought I would do, considering he had a few more horses than me.

OK I'll bite:

I've raced plenty on the street, yeah I'm a rebel. So here are some of the most memorable incidents:

This ricer guy (sorry for the stereotype, but I dont know what the car was, too much aftermarket stuff) happens to see me and comes up behind me and starts tailgating. Man I'm minding my own business, not even going 5mph over the speedlimit. Anyway, now he gets beside me and starts gunning his car. Not much acceleration but lots of buzz. Well, that's just too much for me. I go into 4th and floor it, and hold it there till he's about 100 yards back.

Brand new Camaro SS gets behind me and I've had a bad day, not in the mood to have anyone near my bumper that day. I get on it and I can't lose him. OK, well lets see what he's got. I let him get in front and he takes off. Sure enough I have it floored and he cannot lose me either. That is, until we get to the curves. He has to back off and I keep accelerating. First thing he says to me at the light when he pulls up is: "What year is that?" Needless to say I was in a better mood after that.

98 or 99 Corvette tries to race me and cant get away from me. Poor guy had no traction and almost lost it in the corners - as I was passing him on the inside.

Coming back from my lunch break i see a Mitsubishi Eclipse, sounds all modded. I can hear the high pitch whine of his turbo as his pop off valve is opening, etc. Cant keep up with me on the interstate (although he was just barely slower than me). I get to work and he pulls up, gets out and first thing he says "Man I got to shake your hand, I thought I was about to eat your lunch!" LOL Apparently just got it out of the shop with about $10k done to it. Ohh well.

Then there is my wife in her Mustang GT. Everytime we are in separate cars and we get home, she says "I hate you!" LOL

I may love driving fast and pushing my car and me further and further, but I keep it to the track, VIR, CMP, Lowes, Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen have all served as good places to learn.

When I was a kid I did induce some stop light to stop light racing but that was in some sleeper cars. A Volvo 850R and Audi 200Q w/ 20v motor both served as good unlikely canidates to race with.

My favorite is still racing with this New C4 corvet (this was a while ago) when I was in the audi. It was slightly damp and I just dusted him to 60 or so, and i let off because I didn't want to get a ticket, so a good while after I let off he goes flying by me, I give him a friendly wave and watched him get pulled over just a mile later.

The moral of the story:
Don't try to out launch a quattro in the wet (or snow)

But like I said it is better to take it to the track. Being out on the track w/ 993 adn 996 Twins, 935's, M3's, 944's of all variety, 928's and all sort of other quick cars and quick drivers is a much better way to see how well we can drive our cars, and how much we can get out of them.

I don't usually race - Whats the universal sign or gesture for "No thanks I dont feel like blowing your doors off today"?
Just so the ricers know the reason i'm not racing em...

I still drive like an idiot on the streets =). The traffic lawyer fees are quite hefty every year, but my record is completely clean as a result.

I used to be crazier in my late teens, running from cops in high speed chases (3 incidents, got away all 3). I had a "Getaway in Stockholm" race with a modified 325 convertible (M3 running gear) once, hitting about 250km/h in very light traffic. A normal 22 minute drive at speed limit was done in a little over 4 minutes. I don't have the ***** to do that anymore...

I'm almost 30 now, so it's usually 10 second race bursts to 150km/h or so before slamming on the brakes and driving at the usual 20% over speed limit.

Nothing exciting this year yet, just some Ford Probes, Saturns, and Celica's revving their engine to see what I can do. Those races last about 2 seconds =).

Cool

I had to get of of college for a year to save money to be able to go back a finish. Two months before going back to college I bought a 1985 Honda Prelude that lasted one month. A drunk driver totaled the car. Nothing happened to me but the car was a mess. Anyhow, I never got the chance to test the limits of that car. From that day on every car I have had I would take it to its limit. That way at least I can say that I had my share of fun from the car.

Back to the topic on races. When I had the 300ZX TT I would go to a strip of road 5-8 miles long and we would race the cars to the max. We are talking 150-160 mph (depending on the wind and other factors). I took my BMW to the 135 electronic speed limiter. My Miata to the 130 mph limit (the car was modified with a Greedy Turbo and a custom huge intercooler), and the 993 to a max of 170-172 mph.

That has been a extremely fun activity. Since I relocated to the US and have not had the opportunity to explore the limits of the 951 or the 964. That is sad. But I am scare ****less of a $$$$$$$ speeding ticket and the associated penalties in terms of insurance increases and the such. No thanks. Call it getting old, but that is money that I can spend in my car or the bike.

I do have a funny story, the interesting part is that it does not involve a sport car. I was driving with my girlfriend (now wife) and we went to a stretch of road that was being built thinking it was already finish. There were cars in front. As we are driving the cars in front start lifting a lot of dust and dirt from the road creating a cloud and limiting visibility. When the dust cleared we found ourselves with the end of the road and a drop of about 8 inches into dirt-unfinished area. Funny thing today but it scared the #@$%$ out of us at the time. Imaging if it would have been an unfinished bridge… bye bye piojitos! The car was a Cutlass Sierra, that baby flew (not really that was just my mind playing tricks on me)!! Everything was ok and there was no damage to the car… imaging having to explain to my, now, father in-law that I was on a deserted road with his baby and we had wreck his car!! Until this day he does not know about this incident. Maybe now that they are living with us I will share it.
