I've never had any stop-light races. My races have always been on wide clear roads with no traffic and rolling starts.

Race 1:
The first night I got my car, I'm luggin at about 40mph down a deserted road. I spot a Mr2 (mister 2) turbo with chrome rims not too far ahead, so I decide to see whats up (I always kinda liked these cars). Anywho, I'm just checkin his ride and he thinks I'm instigating a race so he guns it (by now we were on a huge stretch of industrial neighborhood @ about 1:00am). I'm like, forget that, I'll race him. So we're rollin along and once we see the road is clear we get ready. I knew the 44s sweetspot started @ about 3800rpm, so I held it there. I waited and he gunned it. What a pos, I took him by at least 4 car lenghts. I always knew the 44 was fast on rollin starts (taking off the line is like drivin a hog though).

Race 2: I had just washed the car and it's Lemony goodness was shinin bright. I noticed some dude in what appeared to be a highly modded late 80s bimmer 325 gunning it next to me. The thing was loud, real loud. So I'm like, whatever, his pos wants to race my shiny stuff so I'll let him. We reached the above described straight (going the other way though) and I figured I didnt need to keep the motor ready at ~3800 rpm since this thing sounded like a mod experiment gone wrong. So he guns it and I'm like "uh,ok" and I just floor the accelerator (@ about 2500rpm). Damn, his **** was actually fast. So I make a quik gearchange (was about 1 car lenght behind) catch up and go for the kill. Damn highly modded beater was fast though an still had some juice left so I had a couple good moments there trying to dust him. Eventually the 44s high speed ability got the best of the 325 and I won by a considerable margin. Guy gave me some pretty good props after too. ****, the thing sounded so damn loud.

Race 3:
I was playin with a very aggressive 930. He was eating me alive on the straights, but I was catching up on the twisties. Finally, we got to a huge sweeper and I just floored it and passed him on his outside. Damn, the little n/a that could. His **** was so fast though, he was constantly chirping his tires eventhough we were goin over 60 mph.

Probably talking about me. I only do my little spurts when there's no traffic around, and only on 2-3 lane highways (80km/h or higher limits). I also never speed in residential areas. I still take it to the track, but unfortunately, I can't be on the track every day... gotta work to pay for the go-fast crack pipe =).

The speeding tickets I get nowadays are stupid ones, 100 in an 80 zone, 140 in a 110 zone, you get the idea, nothing that's really dangerous IMO, but still can affect insurance and records. My days of $600 speeding tickets are well behind me now.

Ive street raced many times, dont flame me either-I understand its foolish, thats why I started autocrossing and cant wait to do DEs and one day hopefully club race.

Kills
-93 RX7R1.modded turbos, slowly pulled him all the way >125..to say the least..he was very pissed! (he commented on the smoke from the tailpipe, my only response is---you were behind the whole time so you would notice that, huh?
-Numerous mustangs/camaros. been taken once
-93 Mr2 turbo.very modded. tons of boost
about dead even, even hung in the corners
-strosek bodied 964
-99/00 996 carrera
-3 M3s..all were very suprised
-2nd gen RX7 turbo..walked away from it
-a Silver Z8..roasted me off the line, couldnt catch him..awesome car
-a new bodied vette., took me off the line and did catch him...by 3rd gear I was pulling him..by his face you could tell he hated life

Thats all I can think of now..more to come.hopefully on the track!

i would just like to add that if we are all going to publicly post that we go faster than the posted limit, we might as well assume that we'll get heat from other posters.

That said, I'd like to say that the car that the No.1 car I abhor is a Saleen. I can deal with riced out hondas, nissans, mitsubishis, toyotas, ford focus, and even hyundais, but forget those ultra plastic mustangs that look all beefy, but couldn't take a curve at 50, 60, 70 at speed without serious consequences (i am purposely ignoring modded out ones).

i just feel that those cars sre so pumped up and full of fake machismo that they make me sick. anyway, i'm not going to post anything that says, "i beat so and so, etc"... i never *think* about racing anything like the above because even if you win, ya still feel stupid for dropping to that level. you can look at them and the car looks back and is *begging* to be over-revved and pushed. so what! (show me the substance, show me character!).. those cars are tired! track time is a great leveller (i would think). you'd never want to have all that pretty plastic on a track, it'd be a pain in the *** to clean and most of it is non-functional!

i will say that i have had good times with other cars going fast. for example, a dude in his 986 happened to be on the same wavelength and headed in the same direction. he would speed up and i would pretty much keep up, and at times pass him. often i would let him pass, then we start all over again, giving each other thumbs up the whole way. forget competition when the thrill of simultaneous speed pervades; and i'm not even talking about extreme speed either >90mph! I just wish i had a placard in my car that i could have flashed to him that simply said, "there's no substitute"! another time i posted that i tried to keep up with a '00 M5 once last year, damn you guys gave me some ****.. (!)

nonetheless, reality has set in and i've realised that i am in serious need of a TT/DE/AX release (riding in danno's car hasn't helped any either, you try it and you'll see!). tickets/lawyers aren't only a waste of money, but a waste of time, too. wish me luck, i have a court appearance tomorrow at 9am (and i'm not going to say why, let's just say it was REALLY stupid and it's going to cost me a ****load of cash that I could have otherwise used to purchase another 944 + mods- totally wasted on some judge's salary!).

ok, rant over. pfff.

I really do not know where all you guys get these stories. This stuff NEVER happens to me. In either Chicago, or here, in San Diego. I had a 924S, red, and now the S4. It black, but its shiny Th e924S, I guess, got a few people to rev engines, and I guess I might have been tempted into that behavior, but it never panned out. With the 928S4, in Street Racer heaven (SoCal), nothing ever happens to me. I do the 90th percentile speed on the highway, which is faster than most, but this is a constant speed, and I change lanes witha signal. Does this ward off the racers, and say "I'm a fast driver, but I won't break moral laws with you"? There are times when I will "Run" with others, at these speeds, but this cannot be called anything close to racing. I may even continue at my normal 90th percentile speed, and this individual will stay with me. What amazes me is when the individual does not heed the logic that says "changing four lanes at 100 with a 'Five-Oh' getting on the slip-road is not a good idea". I just sssllllooowww down and watch the gumball machine turn on to chase the blind idiot. Comming from Chicago (where they have camaros, mustangs, vetts, minivans, and stationwagons as patrol cars), I am always looking for that hiding cop, or that instigating state patrol in the SUV.

I agree with the anti-street racers to a point. Things happen too quickly when you are out in the public highways. You have too many variables that are not in your control. I DO howver, believe in traveling at speeds above that of other traffic around me. It is proven to be safer than staying in those "wolf packs".

Be careful about those Insurance agents watching these boards

Turby:
No, infact not everyone does it. You aren't being a rebel by street racing you are being a dangerous menace to society. It is possible to ignore people, I guess I should have proven that by just ignoring this thread.

Cale..

Thanks. There is a difference between being a "Rebel" and being a menace. If Turby wants to race, let him join PCA, get some track time. If he wants to see the result of street racing, volunteer time in the emergency ward.

Not every individual killed or injured in accidents is there because of racing, but the broken bodies and shattered lives are the same.

Please, folks, next time some one asks you to race on a public street, think of the potential results. Sure, nothing may ever happen to you, but then again it may. At the least, you may save yourself considerable embarassment because the other guy just may toast your oats.

"Better to keep one's counsel and appear a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

Cheers!!

Not sure how old Turby is, but I was like that as a teenager; pretty much invincible and immortal. I think he's been warned enough, let him enjoy his youth; I don't think our words can effect much.

But as he gets older (or if), he'll have plenty of chances to see friends and family get injured, maimed and killed by traffic accidents. Seeing a favorite teacher run down while riding his bike, or having a friend fished out of his drowned car, or picking arms, legs, brains of a sister or mom off the pavement always tend to make you look at life differently. These things seem to have a Darwinian way of working themselves out...

Ok, I did not say "everyone does it". I said everyone HAS done it. Street or track. I was just trying to post an interesting thread. And by the way, by me saying I was sort of a "rebel" does not mean I am weaving in and out of traffic at rush hour every day, and going 100mph on city streets every time I see a chance. One of my best friends did become paralized as a result of excess speed. When I do choose to exceed the speed limit, I make sure it is in a controlled manner. And yea I am still young(23), Ive got alot of **** & vinegar left in me. But dont knock me, and twist the things I say into something bad. If you want to vent somewhere, go to the gym or become a traffic cop, Post your mis directed anger elsewhere. -Turby

I believe that everyone of us has, at some point in their youth or otherwise, been guilty of extending the bounds of what we would normally do. If you didnt, then you missed out on a intrinsic part of being a human. Its hard to combine "drive it like you stole it" and "dont drive like a wild man" into one philosophy.

My first transportation was a CBR1000, silver and pearl. I learned to drive at speeds over 160 before I got out of 9th grade. I once held a dear friend in my arms while he died, after wrapping himself and his bike around a guardrail post. Speed can kill, folks. But we never, ever, endangered anyone but ourselves.

Teh worst wreck I was ever in was at 45MPH, due to a silly girl with a learners permit making a illegal left turn into the oncoming traffic. I was already into the intersection when she decided to go, I had time to swerve enough to miss the passenger door of her car and hit the rear, saving the life of the boy in front I am sure. Time slowed so much that I never spilled my soda, even when my Wagoneer plowed into their car and tipped up on 2 wheels. As my Jeep spun in violent circles, a semi slipped between the two badly damaged vehicles, after which I went engine first into a light pole, driving the block 14" back into the passenger compartment. Noone was racing, noone was speeding. A n00b driver made a mistake, and 3 people nearly died. **** happens.

I drove too fast, drank too much, slept with too many loose women (havent given that one up yet) and did lots of things that I would not even consider now that I am older.

I believe that those experiences helped shape who I am, mostly in a positive way. Along the way I imagine I cheated death several times. I survived the first "Darwin's Fitness test" and made it to 30.

Yes, some of what has been talked about in this thread is dangerous. At the speeds a 944/Turbo is capable of, any mistake, human or mechanical can be potentially deadly.

I have a video of a rally, where a driver loses control over a hump in the road and slams into a crowd of people, all innocent bystanders. That is a case where driving safely at the track didnt help much. Pro races and DE events have all seen deaths, even in those tightly controlled circumstances. **** happens.

Danno was right, Darwin will thin out the breed according to fitness. And chance and circumstance will always take another toll on those we might deem fit.

It is MHO that the majority of the guys on this forum drive fast cars because they LIKE to go fast. Period. I know I will never outgrow the rush when the world blurs, and the wind becomes one giant noise in your ears, time dilates into stretched moments where every sense is straining for perfection.

But to those who will race regardless of the danger, use your head. Know your car and its limits. Know the driver and his limits. (Yourself) Take the time to further your driver education, and learn how to REALLY drive. You will find that you have less and less need to "prove" anything when you know you can go faster than the other guy has ever dreamed of going. Face it, most peole start grabbing the "oh-****" handles at about 90MPH.

And leave the red lights to the ricers, find a nice empty business park or go out of town and find a deserted stretch of highway.

Drive with your head, not with your *********.
(Unless they can hold the wheel)

You could slip and fall in the bathtub and die. And you could also waste your life worrying about slipping in the bathtub.

Which is worse?

sorry for the repeated edits, couldnt leave this alone.

The most dangerous activity on open roads is following too closely and people driving side by side- nothing pisses me off more than seeing two (or more depending on # of lanes) cars driving side by side on the freeway so no one can pass- not only are they being STUPID, but also annoying, irresponsible and dangerous- especially when a large truck's involved- retreads fly off all the time. Even in a normal car, you NEVER know when something might go wrong and you need room to manuever when something happens. High speed is not always the culprit, but the dif in speed b/t vehicles sometims causes probs- of course, racing is a factor here, not to mention idiots driving slow in the fast lane, making people pass on the right- the Autobahn is strict on this, and people in the fast lane, when going faster than most, turn on their inside blinker to signale the person in front- when I do this here, people probably just think I left my blinker on- IF THEY EVEN NOTICE AT ALL. Obvioulsly racing on public roads is a dangerous activity- my heart goes out to ANYONE who has been hurt b/c of road racing, especially if they were just innocent victims...

There are times and places for everything- I used to be "immortal" too, but I like to think I've matured a little. The serious competitive types who just HAVE to see who's faster are the one's who **** me off- there are many Mustang, Camaro, etc owners who fall into this category, who are just trying to make up for thir small di**'s, by driving large disp autos. I do realize that not everyone who owns one of these cars is this way, however, so please understand that I'm not knocking people for driving these types of car. I do enjoy out-running the larger displacement crowd though, just to see the look on their faces- I had a friend who used to get challenged often in an old VW Rabbit (modded) that he raced- he used to WEAR OUT the Mustang, Camaro, etc crowd in drags, and he was surprised at how many of them actually tried to FIGHT him for beating them after THEY were the ones who challenged HIM (showing off for their girlfriends to make up for their tiny ***** evidently)- these are the worst.

I'm not into drags- usually too difficult to find a nice straight section of open road w/good visibility, no traffic, etc. I don't like the idea of wrecklessly weaving in and out to race- THAT is dangerous. On the freeway, I've run w/a 2000 Mustang GT, RX7TT, '95 Legend, 2nd Gen 300ZX Turbo, '95 V8 Camaro, modded '95 Mustang Cobra R, etc. So far, I haven't LOST to anyone- the closest was the Cobra R- dead even through 4th, but I stared pulling him in 5th on the one run we went that high. I know it's just a matter of time till someone pulls me- I have no illusions- I mostly consider these situations just times when I'm running fast w/someone else, just having fun (no serious competition) and SOMETIMES, as someone else pointed out earlier, it's actually safer than staying w/a large pack. BTW, my Turbo S is unmodded except for a Powerhaus head which doesn't help- I don't even have chips. Anyway, I'm hoping to get some track time soon, which would definately improve my driving skills, more than likely curb my appetite for such delinquient behaviour, and, be lot's of fun as well...

Cool

No Porsche race stories yet. but I have plenty of Mustang race stories. Not these new plastic pretend Mustangs but honest to god '60's Mustangs. My last 'Stang was a '68 GT Convertible, 289, 351 heads, cammed, cranked, dual quads. Dynoed at 340. Was heading home one night from a Shelby club meeting when a friend of mine in his '66 Shelby GT350 pulls along side, rolling start from 70 and we are off. Side by side for about 5 miles before he pulls away like I'm standing still. He toys with me for about 10 more miles. We pull off the highway to gas up early '90s Vette follows us up the ramp. Plays tag with us for a while then tries to pass us on the right while flipping us the bird. We ace him and switch to the right hand lane and begin to back down the speed cause we are heading into speed trap land. Vette boy decides that he's gonna blow by on the left. Big mistake, 4 cruisers parked at an angle to the highway on the inside of a slow sweeping left hand curve.

My friend the 'Stang for his wife which allowed me to fund me first Porsche. These little gems may not have the raw grunt power of early pony cars but they are sweeeeeet!!!
