Centerforce sells a clutch disk for the 944 for around $150. Looks like they adapt another clutch but they use an aluminum ring instead of a series of blocks. If you do some calculations on the stress on the rivets, you get close to the limit on centrifugal force with the blocks. Lots more margin if you make the spacer from a ring. I got a ford bronco clutch for about $45. If you find the right place to cut a section of pipe with the right OD and wall, or cut a ring from plate you might even get it under $100 total.

RG... you're on the road to 944 sainthood. Find a problem, provide a solution. Impressive. Now about your documenting, its a little shaky. For the full halo, we will need PNs, pics, dyno runs, step-by-step, links and more pics. And we need to talk about your name "RGS944" - not catchy man - work on it.

Good on ya lad. Bruce ;]

I did not see the Centerforce one when I was looking. $150 is getting better then the low of $200 that I found. As far as the ring all the way around. A little better design but I still think what we made is plenty strong enough for an average 944NA. Got about 50 miles on so far with a few hard excelerations and things feel great.

It is a reasonable solution. Thanks for the post!

I have heard all kinds of things about a mythical Ford Clutch so and so used to make it work on a Porsche 944. This is the first time I have seen a picture of one. We (I) need more specific information on the Year of Ford Bronco and P/N of said clutch, actual dimensions of the spacer, Size of Bolts/Nuts used to hold Spacer, will the 944 T/O Bearing work, etc.. Even V2Rocket with over 20,000 posts to his credit isn't sure which one to use, Ford or Dodge. Lets put this puppy to bed at long last with the correct information once and for all.

Cheers,
Larry

Just got back from another 50 mile ride. Everything feels great. Our other 83 944 has the original clutch with only 76K miles and this one feels exactly the same. This the first car that I have wrenched on so much and I think it makes it that much more fun to drive. A few of you have asked for more details like PN numbers and I will get those posted soon.

Advance Auto Parts Part No. RCF48801 is the one I used and the one used in the 924org board post. ALL other clutch parts are stock porsche.

I was looking into another "puller" style pp but decided not to just randomly purchase one for testing. My concern was the Ring gear for the starter not being able to mount properly or at all. IIRC I was looking at a Mitsubishi pp but I may have been Subaru

No, you were on track. There is a Mitsubishi Clutch disc and a Mazda clutch disc that will also work on the 944T and a pressure plate from one of those could be modded to work. I thought the starter ring was mounted on the outside of the 944 FW. ICR because I tossed my last 2.5L in the scrap LOL
Can anyone measure a 944 PP and get the total O.D. & friction surface to tine height and the Bolt pattern PCD? I wouldn't be surprised at all if the 240mm RX7 Turbo PP bolted right up. They copied the 944 almost to a T. And I correct myself, I modded the Bronco disc for the 84 NA I had and the RX7 Turbo disc for my 86T I had and put 1000's of miles on them. A solid spacer ring with threadlockers would be replaceable as well.

Here's the one I modded for my 86T.....
If the FW bolt pattern matches, then some spacers for the ring gear could be made to mount to the top of the PP like the 944 does....

Got about 500 miles logged so far, even did a burnout just to make sure there will be no slippage at all. Laid rubber on both wheels. Now don't curse me for abusing the car, it is not something I do on a regular basis . I just wanted to give it the full test.
