Default What Oil To Run In a 2.5L N/A?

I've searched and haven't yet found a trend in opinions on which grade of oil works best in a 2.5 N/A. If memory serves correct, I've been running 15w40 in my 924S and changing it about every 3,000 miles since I've had it. I live in central Texas where it's hot and warm 90% of the year, personally. It seems that some of you guys up north run a thicker grade of oil, but I'm trying to figure out what grade is really the best down here.

Also, is anyone using synthetic? In my 3.0L S2, I've been running 15w50 as it seemed that many members here recommended it since it's a higher performance oil.

So what do you all run in your 2.5 N/A's? All comments are welcome, as I'm interested in knowing what everyone is running in their cars, regardless of location.

I run Valvoline VR1 in my Turbo S 20w50. IN my 944 spec race car I run 20w50 Amsoil series 2000. This has be updated to a 15w50 Dominator oil. Next oil change the dominator is going in. I buy that stuff by 4 gallons at time. I change it every 2-3 track events. Yes the Amsoil is stupid expensive, but I like it for the track. The VR1 seems good form my street car. I have been using that since 1997. Some guys like VR1 in the track to. I want sythetic on the track due to heat.

I run and have run Pennzoil 20W-50 for a few years now. I haven't had a problem with it, but anyone suggest another brand or is Pennzoil ok?

From a Porsche Mechanic:

I use Castrol GTX 20-50 year round and change filter and oil every 3-4K miles.

Valvoline RO 20-50 has one the best composition of additives----ZDDP!

All oils have ZDDP. The difference is the GF-4/SM dropped the mandated ZDDP level down to 800-900ppm where as the previous standard was 1100-1200ppm.

VR-1 hardly has the highest amount of ZDDP available. It is above the old standard which is good, I wouldn't go around saying "it's the best!"

If you don't believe me, here is an oil analysis:

https://rennlist.com/forums/911-foru...acing-oil.html

Phosphorus - 1038
Zinc - 1322

For comparison here is an oil analysis of Amsoil
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...e-results.html

Phosphorus - 1532
Zinc - 1884

I used to run castrol GTX in my 2.5 N/a but recently switched to Mobile 1 5-40 and so far it seems to be a good switch. Both run well in the car.

Can someone explain the oil viscosity numbers to me? I know what's good to run in my cars, and that it has to do with the thickness, but I don't understand the correlation between the first and second numbers (such as 15w50, for example). Yeah, I'm a newbie.

i run 10-30 in the winter and 10 40 in the summer, it keeps the pressure up pretty well until its really hot out. I thought about 20-50 but it seems a bit thick.

15w50 has viscosity of 15 weight cold. and viscosity of 50 weight hot. higher the number, the more viscous the oil is.
