Hey guys,

I've had my schnell short shifter on my '86 944 for a couple months now. I really dig it, but I don't think it's adjusted properly. It currently does not go into 2nd gear as smoothly as the stock one did. I'm thinking I didn't have the shifter positioned properly when I installed the linkage. What do you guys recommend? Should I have it in gear or have someone hold it in place while I adjust it? I remember leaving it in 2nd gear when I first installed it, but I can't find the thread where it said to do that so I'm thinking I might of either misread it or just confused it with something else.

It's been so long since I put it on there that I can't remember how I adjusted it. If you disconnect the long shift rod from the short shifter you can shift the tranny by grabbing the schnell arm and rotating it forward, backward to get a feel of where it needs to be when 1st, and 2nd, etc. are engaged. I would then put it back in neutral, re-connect the shift rod and then align the shift position on the torque tube with the shifter base mount bolts. Mine is about perpendicular to the torque tube when in neutral.

I ended up adjusting mine four or five times before I got it where I wanted it. I had help on my last two tries.

I will be installing one of these in my car either this weekend or next week probably. Any advise for 1st time install.

it's pretty easy to install, but adjustment looks to be more of a trial and error. try this:

and thanks for the info guys. I was thinking there was some set method but doesn't sound like it. I'll be out there in a bit and tinker.

Loosen the rear bolt (above the tranny) and shift the rear linkage towards the passenger side slightly (rotate clockwise).
