Karl,

If I had known what it was worth I would have bought it myself instead of passing it on. The guy only advertised it on one website (non porsche related, and specific to the bay area). I saw the car a day or two after it was purchased and it is GORGEOUS, hadn't even been washed from the 2 hour drive back to San Jose and it still looked good. You will be seeing it at future bay area events. BTW, Your S2 is very nice, saw it in person at the dyno day and at the carlsen swap meet a few weeks back.

Cheers,
-Ben

Here are my thoughts,

First off, what you paid for the car is now water under the bridge. If you bought it to drive and enjoy, then what you paid is pretty irrelavent now. However, if you bought it as an investment to try and sell, then you should have considered this before you bought the car.
In the end, you now have a great car, so why not enjoy it. By the way, to me, the monetary value of an item is only determined at the time of sale ... that is the only true time you know what it is "worth".

Thumbs up

Badger,
I once asked a close friend (that was in the car sales business), "how can you tell if you gave your customers a good deal"? He said, "when they drive it off of the lot with a smile on their face"!
I believe the group here agrees that you may have paid a higher amount for you car than normal, but did you get a NORMAL car. It doesn't sound like it. Another gentleman here stated that he would pay more for a car that was in very good shape, "you get what you pay for".

Oh, and from what it sounds like from your posts on this forum, you still have that smile on your face... sounds like you got a good deal

I DO still have a smile on my face! I have to say that sometimes at night, I'll surf the classifieds and get a little itch for a 928 or a 911. Then the next morning I open my garage and fall in love all over again. Every morning!

My wife is sick of hearing me say "Honey? That is a God damn beautiful car!". She's like "yeah. take out the trash".

There is no feeling like 3rd gear at boost.

Hmm. My .02 is that's a bit pricey, but, what the hell.

If you think of the car as an "investment" or an asset, more accurately, I think you overpaid. By that I mean you'd have a hard time getting your money back if you sold it.

But, if you keep it for a while, especially if you wanted a particular color combination, what's a few grand?

By the way, about 4 years ago I decided to replace my Red '83 NA with a low mi. white/black Turbo or S (as in it had to be low mi., white/black!) And I was willing to pay quite a bit more than it was "worth" for that combination. The car I eventually found had about 45K on the odometer, and, like you, I spent about $2K immediatly on the belts, hoses, etc. (Plus I switched the almost new tires from my NA so almost exactly the same situation as you.)

Let's say you bought a new Audi, or BMW instead. I'm sure the depriciation on that car, as long as you keep your car for 3 or 4 years, would be much more than the $5K or so that you probably "overspent" to buy your baby!

That's my logic, anyway.

There was a perfect 89 951 on ebay about a month ago. Blk/Blk with around 20000 miles listed with a reserve of $19000. I managed to convince myself I needed a newer car (imagine?!) so I contacted the guy. Based on his description and the internet pictures it was as sweet as yours, never modded or raced, always garaged, Sunday driver ( right... what a waste!). I offered the guy straight away $16k for it. Ultimately he did not receive any Ebay bids but sold it for $18K to an Ebay watcher. Well, I hope another low miler comes along

I pait $8K for my 87 951 in May of 00...and since then I have EASILY put twice that into the car... maintience and mods.
If I want this to be a sound investment, I am going to have to keep the car for the rest of my natural life....
and I plan to

A car is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. Period. Your car is obviously worth it. You've got a beautiful example, don't sweat the $$. If spending a few $$ (or a few THOUSAND $$) is a problem, you may be with the wrong marque.. but I doubt that!

NICE! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Since there are a lot of pennys on the table, I might as well toss mine in too....

Like most of the others, I think that a dollar amount is rather irrelivent. You have a great car that you're more than happy with at a price you were comfortable paying. You know what, me too as of one week ago today. Granted, I paid less than half your total price but I have an 86 with a cracked dash, and about $500~750 in parts to be replaced (I do my own wrenching, so no labor fees included). I tell my GF the Exact same thing - only see replys differently "Yes, it is.. lets go for a drive"

Enjoy the car, I am - if it's only eye-candy right now (lol, riding my bike through the Isadore crap because I don't want to subject my 951 to the rain.... is that sad?)

You guys are making me feel pretty good about my decision to spend the dough on this car. Sounds like the head says "a little too much" but the heart says "it's a perfect PORSCHE for God's sake!!!"

I'm pretty damn happy and owning a Porsche is a feeling that can't be described.

I don't think you paid too much at all,a couple of same year cars with more miles than that sold for the same money around here in the last year.
What seems to be missing is that a lot of the cars are in poor condition and require $$$$ to bring them back to life, I know, I looked for over a year for my car, man what a lot of junkers out there!
Nice car, feel good about your purchase and enjoy the ride.

Toronto86 944 One thing you probably already know is, that in BC if a car has been registered out east the value plummets. local cars fetch a premium.
dam that salt eh
