Distributer Cap Mystery
What would cause the contacts to look like this? The buildup is very thick. Cap is only about a year old and I didn't notice any related running issues (?)

check for any wobliness in the shaft that supports the rotor...Looks like the rotor is hitting the cap inserts in addition to the normal arcing...Might put a dial indicator on that shaft..for a check.

I agree, seems like the rotor is wobbling -or- the cap is sibling. Check everything for tightness, especially the rotor. Could be as simple as tightening this up. But I think the cap is toast no matter what. Check rotor as well.
Another thought/ there should be a foam gasket on the metal cover that the the cap mounts onto. Make sure this is not missing.

I would check that the distributor cap is installed correctly. The hold downs at 12 and 6 o’clock lock into tabs. If they aren’t locked in, the distributor cap could wobble (try it by hand, when installed correctly you won’t be able to move the cap at either the 12 or 6 position. I think both rotor and camshaft being out of alignment are unlikely. Probably very simple.
