Ha, 8 YEARS OLD. After I read this thread all the way through I just noticed the thread is 8 YEARS OLD. Still good information on being a HONEST PERSON in selling a car. Knowing something important HAS to be done and keeping quiet about it is almost the same as stealing from an innocent person. IMO

Even the 968, with a true auto-tensioner on the cam belt, needs to have the balance shaft reset after 1500-2000 miles. I had records showing a belt replacement about 5K before I bought the car; I didn't even think about a retension, just assumed the PO'd had it done. Apparently not, since it became noisy about 2-3K later. Took off the cover, the balancer belt belt was loose & floppy... YIKES! I whipped it up tight by feel, then took it immediately to my wrench who has the magic tool.
Y'all who are being told by your shops that retensioning is not needed, _FIND ANOTHER SHOP_ if the one you're using won't listen! This is as important as replacing the belt in the first place; not doing it will have the SAME consequences as not replacing the friggin' belt! If they insist that it isn't needed, ask for a 45K mile warranty, covering all collateral damage in the event of a failure.

My secrete is I don’t put the front belt cover on after putting on a new belt, and then I simply retension the belt at 3k. My cars rarely go out in bad weather, and this keeps it simple!

Hi all - my timing belt was done 2 years ago by PO, he only put 400 miles on the car. I have added another 200 in the last month alone. Is it too early to get retensioned? Thx

What car? If it's not a 968 then in my experience the belt gets quite loose very quickly as the belt wears to match the worn sprockets. It'd be OK IMO to do it now, plus you can see if there is anything goofy in there, balance belt out of time or installed incorrectly, tensioned the wrong way, etc.
