89' 944 exhaust smell inside?
Can anyone tell me why I am getting a exhaust smell in my 944? I took out the bad emission tube and plugged the hole in the pipe. Still got the smell. It comes and goes.????? Could it be the back hatch seal? Don't see any cracks in the header. And,no visible smoke. Seems I get the smell most when I down shift. Any help would be great. Not scared to turn a wrench. Thank you.

Be careful! You could get a carbon monoxide buildup that could be deadly; I suggest strongly driving with all windows down, and fix that ASAP!

The hatch seal seperates with age. check the gap at the seal near the center back OF THE HATCH. Carbon monoxide killed my best friend- its nothing to toy wIth!

welcome troy,
my car use to have some fierce cabin fumes, i now have none...this is what i did:
-replace rear hatch seal as perry pointed out
-there are 3 drains/openings in the spare tire well (1 dead center in the bottom; 2 along the passenger side of the well), plug them up
-separate the gas cap overflow drain and the sunroof drain, theres an excellent write up on this..gimme a sec to find it fumes post
i'd love to set a wind tunnel pic of the 944/51 w/ the smoke flowing over the car. i know this series of cars has an excellent coefficient of drag, but i'd like to see if it forms a "pocket of smoke right behind the taillights.

The area below the spoiler is of low pressure when you are at speed. When you open the sunroof, you create a vacuum in the cabin, and it will draw air from that low pressure area. If the seal is worn or seperated, it will suck that exhaust right in.
Been there, done that.

Like I said, all windows DOWN, didn't say anything about being UP!
Fix it, ASAP! Hate to see you die from it.

I had a smell in the cabin that turned out to be fuel from a leaking intake manifold gasket (only smelled it under boost, obviously). The climate control system brought the air into the cabin. If you are sure the odor is that of exhaust then this problem does not apply to you, however it is worth consideration.

Perry is actually right. Opening the windows/sunroof will pull the exhaust into the car. Best bet is not to drive it until it's fixed. However, driving with all windows down won't get rid of the smell, but the fumes shouldn't concentrate enough to hurt you (unless you're on a LONG drive. Don't drive accross country!

Don't forget to check your inner shift boot. I had a hole in mine and it was letting fumes in only when it was in certain gears. It got worse if the windows were down.
