Loose steering column 83 944
On my 83, there is a bit of play up and down and side to side when you grab the steering wheel. The rack is fine. It seems like it is in the column.
I know on 911s this is a common problem with a $10 fix kit. Is there something like this 944s?
Or, would/could replace the part referred to as "column tube" in parts diagrams for around $40.

There is also a bearing in steering colum. It is part of the ignition lock I believe. You could have damage that bearing.
When you remove the steering wheel and the switch gear should see it.

Also check the u-joint on the steering column. When I got my car, mine had some play which resulted in a bit of a vague steeering feel on-center. Replacing the U-joint wasn't too expensive and it fixed that problem right away

old tread back to life....hopefully.
i have had my 83 for several years now with the annoying up and down and left to right play. i replace ignition housing with a known tight one. but still play. i tighted my u joint up and it helped a little and my manual rack is rebuilt and help a little more. but i still have half an inch of play all around. so could it possibly be the u joint? or is there some other bearing worn out.
thank for any help!
