Price Check: 90 944s2 cab with 60k

Hi there, I need some help determing the value on a clean 1990 944s2 cab, triple black, with 64,000 miles, and has had the 60k service completed. (also has newer top, and fresh tires)

is the 60k service the one that replaces the timing belt?

any tips on what to look for? (I'm thinking of buying)

:bigbye:

mhr 04-19-2010 10:21 AM

from what I have seen around if the car is well documented and up to date with all service (Belts, Water Pump and tensioner) then around 9k - 10k would be worth it.

If you have to put 2k in the day you purchase (like mine) then $7500 or so.

Not sure what is in the 60k service. If the belts have not been done even if they are not due mileage wise they need to be done age wise.

Agree with mhr. $9k ish if belts / rollers , water pump etc. are already done and is REAL good shape.
Does he have all the documentation and service receipts? Get a pre-purchase inspection!

thanks guys, I have not seen the car, but spoke to owner last night... he said he's owned it 2 yrs, and only put 2000 miles on it, and did the 60k service from a known local shop (I trust).

I'll probably see the car on wed or thursday...

he's asking 13k, so we'll see on the price...

I've looked at a few 968 cabs, but this will be the 1st 944cab I've looked at....

The s2 is a 2.7 ltr, vs 2.5 for the normal 944, right? any other changes for S2's?

mhr 04-19-2010 02:36 PM

944 s2 is 3.0 L about 200hp. 968 is 3.0 L as well but has some more advanced technology in the engine MAF vs AFM and the head is different. Worth about and extra 35HP.

I personally prefer the look of the 944 cab vs the 968 but that is a matter of taste.

mhr is correct. The 944S2 has a 3.0L DOHC, approximately 208hp with four valves per cylinder. Standard pre-1989 944's are 2.5L SOHC with two valves per cylinder. The S2 also has upgraded brakes, suspension, wheels, etc. over the standard 944. Also has an upgraded interior over pre-1985.5 models. The bumpers and rear valence are also upgraded from the normal. Also the wheels, etc.

I also prefer the late 944's design to the 968's, but again, that's just personal preference. For the record, I had the same mindset before I bought my S2. But no doubt that the 968 is a superior car performance wise.

mrbill_fl 04-19-2010 07:46 PM

do you think the 944s2 cab parts would be easier to find than a 968?

and can I start swapping 968 parts if needed? will the 6 speed box fit in a S2 ?

I know a shop that does LS2 small block swaps on 968's

I really think he should drive both before making his mind ( S2 208 hp versus 236hp for the 968 ) easier to get extra hp from a 968 if needed be ( S2 5 speed versus 6 speed for the 968) .Something else for a little more money you can get yourself a newer car,& I agree the 968 is superior , and don't get me wrong here, I love the S2 & it was my first choice before I boutgh my 968 ,try them both I choose the 968 ,Had a 944 na for 26 yrs & wanted a little change in the look departement but also a matter of tast here. The big difference is the way power is deliver MAF vs AFM & the vario cam. "Full- power Curves" you will find a torque plot for the 968 that is very nearly flat from a 1,000 RPM to 6,500 RPM this abundance of torqe at all speed ranges make the 968 very easy to drive in all kind of situations. So I suggest ____ mrbillfll that you try both not only for a spin around the bloc but for a good run on different kind of roads, look is not what always make the car.Good luck .

I completely agree. Well said.

I have a early 911 track car, so this car would really be a Sunday driver, but I'd probably get a roll bar built so I could track it on occasion. mostly I'm looking for a cab.. for touring... This one popped up on CL, and looks like its got potential.

I've driven 2) 968s' but its been too long to compare. to a 944. I've also driven some 951's and na 44's on track. (DE instr.)

what about parts on the 44cab to a 968 cab?
I figure there are more 944's for parts, than 968's, so should be cheaper for steering racks, suspension components, (take off parts), etc. or am I dreaming?

mhr 04-19-2010 09:36 PM

My experience so far (s2 cab owner since December) is that it is easy enough to get parts. Majority of parts from any S2 work and I find it is quite easy to work on especially considering it is the first car I have worked on.

Re the extra power and gear in the 968 it would be nice to have, but I bought the car for a roof down fun to drive cruiser not tire melting so the style was important to me. To each his own it all good!

Don't shy from the price too much. I think that $9K would be a steal and $13K is a little high but not too far off. Cabs are hard to find in good condition. many of the cabs have been abused and if this car is low miles, clean inside and out, and maintained then it's worth a few more bucks. One area to pay close attention to is the top. Most of the car is the same as coupes so parts are not an issue; however, the top and seals can be very pricey. Make sure the seals are not dry and that the top works properly. Bows have a tendency to bend and snap. Good luck!

I'd take a clean, well maintained S2 over a beater 968. The S2 gives you about 85 percent of the driving experience of a 968 cab at about 60 percent of the cost. Put on 968 door handles and mirrors, pop on some Cup 1 or 2's and you're home free.

Don't for one second think that I'm a tire melter first I,m 65 yrs old not a kid anymore & my car are use for for the street not (track) I,ve own Porsche since the 70's both air & water cool the last one I owned last me 26 yrs & is still running strong & in show room condition, what I,m trying to do here is compare both 944S2 & 968 as they really are ,once again I love both cars but prefer the road handling & the torque of the 968 not all Porsche owners are Sunday driver & once in a while we enjoye a little spirit driving after all that how those car was meant to be driven . As far as parts is concern they are pretty well available for both car, maybe someone owning a 968 cab could chip in & give us his side of the story mine is a coupe. mrbillfii____As far as starting to switch parts from a 968 to an S2 believe me it will be cheaper to buy the rigth one in the first place same apply for an LS2 conversion your talking $$$$ .

mrbill_fl 04-19-2010 10:23 PM

owner says its had the top replaced. and it sounds clean... but you never really know till you see it...
more than once the car sounded great on the phone... then turned out to be a total beater... lol.
