Post A/C switch replacement?

My 86 944 Turbo's A/C is inop. I'm suspecting the switch (push button, lighted snowflake symbol) in the dash because is depressed into the dash trim and will not pop out or light up.

I've found a parts distrubutor that sells the switch by itself for $45-. But, one parts guy in Florida says that it's impossible to change out just the AC switch because the factory solders them straight into the climate control panel.

Is this true?? Can I replace just the switch?

(Thanks for everyones replies to my questions here on this forum, you've all been a BIG help!)

IIRC, the switch is replaceable. I don't have the writeup handy, but I believe there is one available in the 924/944 E-Mail list archives under "snowflake switch."

The switch is definitely replaceable. Quick and dirty is to remove the A/C control unit, CAREFULLY open it up. Unsolder old switch, solder new switch. I did this to my car 4+ years ago. Still chillin'
