What is VW sealing compound D3
 

Anyone have a Loctite equivalent (or other) for VW sealing compound D3. This is in the factory manual for the transaxle reassemble.

Not sure. Where does it go in the transaxle? If your mating two metal surfaces together Porsche uses Drei Bond which is a silicon type of sealer. There are others out there that are supposed to be good.

It's the sealer called up for sealing the main gearbox housing (the cast iron one) to the differential housing, and the ring gear bearing cover to the differential housing. Neither have a gasket or seal (although PET shows a "sealing ring", my trans has nothing).

Nissan uses an orange sealant that is real good. Also, Mitsubishi used a white varient that is real good as well. My experiance with these is for mating the two halves of a 911 engine case. Try one of your local dealers and see if the have any in stock. Sorry I don't have part#s off the top of my head. For that matter, maybe your local VW store may have what your looking for. Good luck. If I find some numbers of that japanese stuff I'll let you know.

The Loctite product most often used in this application is Loctite Flange Sealant 574.

I use HondaBond in applications like this fairly often with great success. Seems to be one of the better options in my experience.

+1 for loctite 574, thats the right stuff to use.

While I did have the correct loctite on hand, when I took my diff cover off,I was not aware they called for it, as the old stuff I scraped off was green, not orange. I sealed it with Hylomar, and that works.

On the 944 series transmissions, the factory uses the orange sealant commonly referred to as Loctite 574 between the gear carrier (steel center section) and differential carrier (aluminum front section), which is good for larger gaps between mating surfaces. They use green sealant like Loctite 573 on the differential cover plate when there is no o-ring. The green stuff is for smaller gaps. I do what the factory does and use Wurth products:

There is no need to use sealant in other places on the 944-series gearboxes. The paper gaskets seal just fine. Make sure the surfaces are clean and true, clean away old sealant with a single edge razor, maybe scuff lightly with a scotch bright pad if helpful, rinse with solvent. Where there are gouges in the mating surface, I use JB Weld to fill, then level to true with very fine sandpaper.

On the 968 gearboxes, the factory uses only the green stuff, and it gets used in a few more places. There are other sealants that works well enough, such as Loctite 518. The advantage to using 573 and 574 is that they are easy to apply (use a small brush, like a solder brush) and easy to remove. I've wasted a lot of time removing other sealants that are less easy to clean up, and especially dislike having to chase after RTV type sealants.
