Default headlight linkage delete -XSBOOST prototype -NOW WITH H4 LIGHTS

Last summer i deleted my headlights all together and just mounted the doors solid to the body via some brakets to the hinge. Many lately have been fighting with light alternatives and ways to conserve space under the hood for either asthetic reasons or like me, room for an MAF etc. VT951 and I were looking at his car while its in my garage, thinking of ways to ditch the stock linkage and motor, but retain useable headlights w/ maybe some HID lights etc. Last week i ordered up some electric 12v actuators and a couple five pole relays and started thinking of ways to make them work for my car. Today i wrapped up the preliminary install of the motors. Now my headlight doors open about 2/3 using the factory light switch, and use very little room to accomplish it. Using the ideas from my custom brakets and some templates, we may be able to get some water jet copies-IE much nicer- and with alittle more testing, come up with a bolt on kit for anyone who wants to delete their headlight linkage but keep it reversable if needbe. The actuators I am using are not cheap though, so kit pricing would reflect this. We are also looking into light options such as HID and aftermarket lenses that can be mounted in the smaller opening. With any luck we could show a kit off at the Fest this year on Alans and my own car- should i not bring the Dragon. I am happy though, finally some room for my air filter to chill.

Very cool!!
Should be fairly easy to fab up some light buckets and install some small projectors or something?
Even some 90's Camero Lights?

Where did you get the PS resivior?

How long would the actuator throw have to be to get them to fully open? What's the working throw length that you've got with the ones you are using?

these are a 1.96" throw- you'd prob need about a 3" throw i would guess- I can measure off Alan's car later to confirm, and look up to see what kind of actuator would work.

the place i bought the actuators from has limited sizes- next size up is 3.7" throw and is two inches longer which will not fit into that same spot. Im guessing if we drilled the arm up higher to mount the actuator it would open completely. This may need some careful measuring- i'll let Alan do it.

I was thinking a possible market for these might be for S2 owners who wanted to use Carl's SC kit -- the way his 968 kit works at the moment, you need to delete the light lifting bar mechanism for it to fit. At the moment his kit isn't really suitable for people who want to keep the stock headlight look.

Looks like you are onto the basis of a good design here -- good prototyping!

Nice job dan, now I have to come up with a whole new project for myself... or just finish some of my old ones...

Damn IT... I'll just go sit in the corner now... BTW, a ball-screw setup would be much easier to control as the variable would be number of rotations, which can be easily controlled using a timer or a rotary encoder, or even limit switches (i.e. electric sun roof)... but enough of my mindless dribble.... not to mention ball-screw setup (Or lead screw for that matter) is way cheap compared to the linear actuator... but enough from me....

(BTW your actuator is bust a ballscrew in a pretty aerospace package)

Unless they fall off the back of a truck, you won't get "cheap" linear actuators..

About as cheap as they get... http://www.firgelliauto.com/default.php?cPath=82

$119 for 3 inch tube style with 40Lb holding force, Dan yours look to be higher holding force, but have you looked at what is actually needed to hold the buckets open (or closed) at speed?
