Default NLA timing mark sender

For some time, us 931 S2 guys have been hampered with failing crank reference sensors, which are NLA from Porsche. We've been doing some digging over on 924board, and a couple of astute guys there noticed that the 944 and 928 "timing mark senders" as they're called in PET have the same sensor, albeit with a shorter lead. After doing some searching in PET, what I've learned is that the part number is 911.606.108.00, and was used on all 928s from 1984-88 and all 944s from 1984-onward.

Unfortunately, the 928/944 part is also NLA.

What are you guys doing when your crank sensors fail? If it's not a problem for you now, it soon will be. Maybe we need to pool our collective efforts to find a way to get these back on the market? Thoughts?

Thats just a diagnostic ref. sensor for the 944. DME doesnt use it for anything. It sits with the connection end capped, attached to the rear engine lifting ring on the back of the cam tower. No one would ever know if their sensor is bad or not.

The actual 944 DME speed and ref. sensors are 944 606 115 00 and are still available OE and also generic Bosch.

Interesting. PET calls it the timing mark sender. Hmm. I'm familiar with the one you're referring to, and it's too long.

From a 944

From a 931 S2

The part you're referring to:

We need the part above

you need the crank position sensors. They are still on the aftermarket parts. Take a look on e-bay, they are on there all the time.

No, the bottom pic is the one we DON'T need. It's the top two pics, either one of those that we're after. I think we're screwed, as oddjob notes above, on the 944 and 928 applications, they were just a diagnostic plug used by the dealer, so most folks have pitched them. They are NLA, and would have to be modified anyway to work for the 931.

Looks like the most feasible route right now is to compare the resistance and function of the 944 unit on an oscilloscope to a known good 931 S2 unit to see if the sensor portion would be interchangable. If so, then we could source those new and modify the the cable to be long enough and put on the correct connector, which is an off-the-shelf part. If we use the 944 part, though, we have to come up with a way to mount and adjust it because its "snout" is way too long, as you can see by the photos.
