Default alternatives to 968 mirrors??

Just curious. Has anyone ever tried to mount mirrors other than the 968 mirrors?

Someone posted a pic of the old A4 RS2 Audi (think that was the model) and noted the 968 mirrors and it got me thinking.

There are Audi mirrors that look like a more modern flag-style...they're like $30 each, brand new electric/heated on ebay....and I am wondering if they would fit.

I also have started to notice other body-mounted mirrors on other cars that might work....miata is one that comes to mind.

Just curious if anyone's ever experimented

Audi RS2 mirror used the same 968/964/928 mirrorhousing added with Audi type mirror leg. So most likely newer Audi Mirrors won't with 944 models.

Also lot's of other Porsche parts in that Audi, like wheels (4 Porsche front wheels), 993 front blinkers, 993 brakes etc. Not to mention Porsche built 5 cyl Audi engine

excellent idea....

i looked into this last year and found a mirror which had the correct angle mounting plate but I can't for the life of me remember what make of car. maybe VW ?
I also looked for a better height centre arm rest and found an excellent alternative from Jaguar. Higher with a sensible sized cubby hole.

I like the shape of the Rover pod but it would need some work on the bracket I guess.

If the housings are the same, then you can buy the 968 mounting leg from Porsche. I bought legs for mine a few years ago, iirc they weren't too expensive.

i hate to say it as every ricer under the sun (including my buddy with a S14 240) has em but someone from Singapore on the list has M3 copy mirrors that actually look acceptable

Don't think that will work...those get mounted where the A-pillar and door meet...in the corner of the window.

I was thinking maybe one of these....

From a C-5 vette, miata and a Z-3 Bimmer

one thing to take note of is that the 968 mirrors are positioned forward of the mounting foot.

Most of the others are either straight out or toward the back.

When I did my cheapo mirror swap I had to move them forward on the doors requiring new holes and filling the old holes. I did it mostly to save weight and somewhat for looks. I still need to make some gaskets to support them more upright. I do like it though.
