Talking Thanks Paragon! SE Texas Rennlist Go-Kart Challenge was a success!

Thanks go out to all who attended the first SE Texas Rennlist Go-Kart Challenge race at Davey Jones' Kart Zone in Houston.

A Special Thank You and a big to Jason of Paragon Products for providing lots of cool door prizes.

We had 9 in attendance at our first meet! Seven participated in the racing action, one had to pass due to recent surgery, and one was unable to stay as he came over on his lunch break!

Qualifying and racing action was hot and heavy. Mad George took top qualifying honors with a 27.606. Here's a look at the times, with Rennlist nicknames where known...

Mad George 27.606 FTD
Tom aka txhedg 28.551
Joyce (icat's better half) 29.216
Keith aka icat 30.481
Paul 30.664
Bob 30.728
Pete aka PeteL 30.936

Race results mixed up the field a bit, but Mad George and txhedg left all of us in the dust. The remainder of us attempted to enter turn one on lap three as a wild pack of screaming karts. A great deal of "NASCAR" tactics were used (bumpn's racin' ) as we attempted to enter four abreast. It seems I won that round as I wound up in third place with a clear track ahead. Catching Mad George (1st place) and txhedg (2nd place) was out of the question though.

Paragon Door Prizes we given out in the following order with each person getting to choose their favorite from the box.

1st - Greatest Distance Driven - Pete aka PeteL allthe way from Beaumont, TX (about 100 miles!)

2nd - Highest Mileage on Car - Paul (approx 122k)

3rd - FTD and Race Winner - Mad George

4th - Second in Race - Tom aka txhedge

5th - Third in Race - Keith aka icat

6th - Fourth in Race - Joyce aka icat's better half. Who passed on the prize as I had already won something, so Bob took the final "award".

Door prizes included:
White Paragon T-Shirt
Blue Paragon T-Shirt
Koni Polo
Porsche Logo Valve Stem Caps
Longacre Racing Tire Guage
Swepco Engine Treatment

Following the racing action, several of us headed over to Bennigan's for dinner and some additional bench racing. The whole event was a blast and I hope more of you can come to the next SE Texas Rennlist Go-Kart Challenge!

One final note, special thanks goes out to Geo George (out for the season due to minor surgery) for being the offical track photographer during the race. Hopefully Geo can post the pictures soon!

See ya' next time.

I should have gone to dinner with y'all! After finding the freeway closed, I decided to duck down Buffalo Speedway to 610. There I got locked into the football game traffic. Grrrr..... Spent about 20 minutes or so at Buffalo Speedway and 610 due to total gridlock. It was unbelieveably stupid. I called 911 and told them they needed to get a cop there. Nobody was moving. Finally a motorist got out of her car and directed traffic!

To make a long story short, I didn't get home with dinner until 7:45 anyway!

Oh well, next time Kerry will be able to come. We're looking forward to it.

Actually, I just took the photos. The camera belongs to Tom. So, perhaps we can get him to post a few photos.

I can't wait until next time so I can race.

I had a great time. I want to point out that my qualifying time in no way represents my driving. There was a ton of BLOCKING going on out there. Never got a clear lap. As for the race, well lets just say track position is everything. Please note who had third fastest lap of the race.
Thanks for setting this up and thanks to all who showed. Was alot of fun, definitely worth 200 miles of driving. Now to fix the cruise control.

Pictures, you want pictures???

Sorry for the low quality of the pics (I think the interior lighting screwed up the camera's exposure....anyway, they are semi viewable.

Left to right it is (i think): George (Geo), Mad George Sargeant, Joyce, Keith (icat), Paul, Tom (txhedg), PeteL, and Bob.

I was reminded by someone that we are all usually much better looking than this, but after running the karts for 20 minutes in a rather hot warehouse, we all have quite a nice case of helmet-hair.

More pics to come as I mess around with the exposure to make them viewable.

BTW, I think with the added 100+ lbs my kart was carrying, I actually may have been faster than Mad George on a handicapped basis. Put a 12 yr old kid standing on the back of george's kart and i bet i could have beaten him

Thanks for the prizes JASON. Once again PARAGON comes thru. Sorry you couldn't make it. Do you carry those Paragon T's in a XXL? I'm sure Duncan has asked you that before

Lined up on the grid for the standing start of the "official race"

Above, keith leading the pack onto the front straight.

txhedg sporting the Sparco special order "hawaiian print driving suit"....not as common as they used to be. Its tough when the kart suits only fit guys up to 5"11 and 220 lbs)

Great shots Tom! You even got all the names right! I'd blame my "lack of qualifying" on my weight as well, but you weigh more and did better!

Joyce was the one to watch out for! She's a terror on a kart! We had a blast - hope to do it again real soon.

By the way - are any of you guys as sore as Joyce and I! I can hardly lift my arms today!

Geo George - check your PM - might have a final door prize for you.

My ribs and kidney area hurt today.

It was nice to meet all you fellow rennlisters yesterday as well. We'll have to do it again sometime soon.

It looks like the KArtZone has applied for a liquor license, so hanging out in the upstairs room will be more fun next time

Thanks again to PeteL for instigating the whole thing, to icat for organizing it, and to Jason at Paragon for the party favors. There are are at least four other 951 houstonians I know that spend some time on rennlist (Rob G, Matt T, Don S, Eugene....any of you reading this???), and for the next event I will get organized soon enough to make sure I get them to come out too.

Heck yeah! I was hoping they would have some adult beverages.

Another idea I've had for a while, but would require getting some other crazy people involved, is to try to create a "Grand Prix Club" that meets there for every F1 race. Have a breakfast (for the Euro race) during the race and afterwards, have our own race while everyone is pumped up. For the Far East races, have our own race first and then watch how it's really done along with some finger foods and such.

Anyone else crazy enough?

My buddy that I got into karting used to call me every morning right after the start of F1 races. It was a blast.

OK, I like to mess with images (in college I used to make color enlargements for a photo lab) so I messed with the grid photo a bit....

I'll try to do some more.

It was probably trying to balance the ambient light with the flash in retrospect. Probably should have taken the flash off automatic I guess.

No way Tom, your butt was just as firmly planted as mine in those seats. I think a butt jack would be better to help us get out of the darn things!

I am crazy too, and the kart "crack-pipe" has a pretty good grip on me. I can probably make a monthly trip to Houston for unsupervised fun. Let me know the date and I will show up. Way to fun to miss!
