Post Transmission Drain Plug

Where does one buy an 11mm hex head socket. (aka allen head) I have tried Sears without any luck. I found a local hardware store with 11/16" which works out to 11.5mm. Where did you guys get your sockets?

Autozone has em, comes in a set of 3, don't remember the price - 1/2 in drive. Mine must have been torqued to something 90 lbs too, but the tool did the deed with out a problem.

I got mine at AutoZone, too. $12 for 3 sizes. I haven't used it yet, but I've heard if the allen is too long, you won't be able to fit it in to do the fill plug. Of course, I was told that by someone who spent $20 on the "special" tool from Performance.

You can also use a double ended nut,put that in the drain plug then put you socket on the other half!Cost about .79 cents at any hardware store.that worked for me as the allen key sat on the floor while I used the nut!!!I was able to put more pressure on it.

Thanks guys. I was reaching the point of using a bolt with two nuts bound together inserted upside down to remove the plug. A hokey solution at best.

James, are you sure it's 11mm? Mine is a 17mm, but maybe turbo and NA trannies have different plugs?

Just make dam' sure that the _fill_ plug can be loosened _before_ you pull the drain plug! (this vital tip brought to you courtesy of Hans, who we haven't seen recently...)

I agree, 11/16 is almost exactly 17mm. Mine came from Snap-On, and attaches to my 3/8 ratchet.

I made a 17 mm adapter from a 10mm bolt, the head was 17, and nut. Then I used my 17mm socket. Cost me like 90 cents. This was after I couldn't find the 17 mm allen wrench I spent 8 bucks on.
Oh well

Yes, it is 17mm. I was having a brain freeze when typing. I did purchase a set of 3 hex head sockets from the Auto Zone. Not as good as a Snap On, but better than a bolt with some nuts attached. Next question.

I understand the trans requires hypoid oil, I see alot guys putting Red Line fluids in. I remember this stuff from my racing days, but I was thinking about a full sythetic. (Mobil or the like) What do you guys use and where do you purchase it. (I am in Atl)

I use the Mobil 1 Gear lube, available at finer (and lesser) auto parts stores everywhere.
