Water pump housing insert collars
My 2.7L replacement water pump, which is a Zim's rebuilt unit, has two protruding inserts or collars in two pf the bolt holes (circled). The protruding inserts/collars don't allow the pump to bolt flush to the block -- the bolt holes they line up with on the block aren't big enough to take them. The water pump I just removed doesn't have these.
What's going on? Are some blocks drilled to take these, and others aren't? Do new pumps have these, or are these only found on some rebuilds?
And if your block isn't drilled for these, are you supposed to remove them?
Side view to show how far they protrude:

I've never seen them before. It looks like they are meant to act like dowel pins. Are the holes larger than normal all the way through or just counterbored to accept the pins? If the latter, I see no harm in just removing them and using a little extra sealant in those areas.

The inserts go through the whole length of the hole -- they end flush where the washer would sit on the other side of the housing. Whether the holes have actually been enlarged to accept the inserts is unclear, as the bolt holes on the orginal pump are quite generously sized for the 6mm bolts they take. The inner diameter of the inserts handles the 6mm bolts fine.

If you can drive them out easily, I would do that, cut them shorter and re-install. I know you don't want to send it all the way back to Texas... If they don't want to come out use a cut off wheel and then a little careful filing.

OK - got them out. A guy on the pelican board said he'd got these from Zims before, and he managed to twist them out with a pair of vice grips. I didn't have a pair of vice grips, so I wrestled with a set of non-locking multigrips.
I didn't actualy remove them with the multigrips, but I mangled the end of one of the inserts badly enough that I could put a drill bit through that was about 6mm in diameter, and then tap it out. The insert came in handy to help press the other one out, also tapping with a hammer.
So not the most elegant approach, but it's done. Thought I'd write this up in case anyone else comes across this. I wonder if these dowel inserts are anything to do with a 968 block? (since the 944 and 968 have the same waterpump...)
