Post ex911ence........and others from Vancouver/Vancouver Island

ex911ence, are you in Victoria? I have been planning a move to BC for sometime and had initially had a transfer to Vancouver but I cancelled, what is Victoria like? I have been thinking about going there instead now, maybe not so "busy" as Vancouver, with most of the same benefits....what are the roads like there, and are there some good driving roads as well? Thanks.

Hey Randy thanks for the compliments, your 951 is pretty sweet also! I had a transfer approved in Dec. for a position in Vancouver (I work for TD Bank) but I decided I didn't have enough cash saved up for the move, so I decided to wait. I am planning on moving hopefully sometime before this fall. I was initially thinking Vancouver, but lately I have been wondering about Victoria....I currently live in a samll city of about a hundred thousand in NB, and although I have spent some time in Vancouver (and really liked it) I was thinking that maybe Victoria might suit me better, maybe not as hectic as Vancouver........

Hi kgain968,

I've lived in both (8 years in Victoria, 3 so far in Vancouver) and have great things to say about both places. Victoria is smaller, quieter and cheaper (not that there aren't quiet, cheap places in Vancouver, but you get the picture) and there are some great roads to drive on (Munns Road or the road to Port Renfrew anyone?) but there is much more variety in Vancouver.

Victoria is on an island, remember, with only a couple of roads heading out of the city. If you want to go for a long drive you have to take the Island Highway north and that's really your only choice. You can get off the highway and take some side roads but you always end up getting back on that highway. Going anywhere else off the island requires a ferry ride of 1.5 hours coupled with at least another half-hour of waiting, boarding, etc. and $50 each way.

In Vancouver, however, you can just jump in your car and go in a number of different directions. You can go south into Washington, north to Whistler, east to any number of destinations. You still have to spend some time getting out of the city but not nearly as much.

Then there's the monthly runs up to Squamish or beyond with the Porsche club. Last year, the several times I went, there were over 40 other Porsches. You can't beat a *****-to-the-wall run up that road with a long string of fantastic cars at 6:30 in the morning.

In short, from a driving perspective, there are many more options in Vancouver. But Victoria is a great place, too; houses are much cheaper. BC is a fantastic place to live and there's lots to recommend where ever you choose to move to. There's always room for another 968 on the club runs, though. Did I mention the member here who has an 800hp 968?

Hey there Kevin!
I was wondering what happened to you. I remember you talking about moving out here, and we were helping you try to find cheaper car insurance. Let us know when and if you make the move, we're planning to get together for some drives as soon as the weather picks up.

No matter where you end up, you have to join us for the local PCA-CWR drives up to Whistler on early Sunday, or one of our 944/951/968 group tours. Take a look at the photos from the last one:

kgain968: Yes, I am in Victoria and I love it! I was born in Fredericton and grew up in Ottawa and Victoria reminds me of both cities. We're about 300,000 in population with a total pop on the Island of less than a million. The general feel of the whole Island is relaxed and traffic is seldom an issue (unless you get jammed up in the ferry traffic... 700+ cars unloading onto a 2 lane highway. Groan!). Speaking of ferries, they are kind of a pain and yes, it's approx. $50 each way but the silver lining is that you get an hour and a half boat cruise through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world! I've been here about 1.5 years and the ferry trip is still a special occasion to me. Besides, unless you need to hit an IKEA, the Island offers anything you'd need.

You can tell I'm smitten, eh? Here's the clincher: if it's rainy in Vancouver, it's probably just overcast (or sunny) in Victoria. The air is cleaner (no air care checks on your car!), the grass is greener and the sky is bluer. Plus, all of the pot you can smoke! (Not that I do... it's just quasi-legal here...).

There are TONS of great roads here and because there's only one main artery running north-south, there are countless other veins speading out all over the Island.

Bonus: there's a unique PCA Region here and we have a pretty full calendar of events planned. And, the CWR Region is just a ferry trip away so there's always lots to do! But wait, there's more: YOU CAN DRIVE THAT 968 ALL YEAR ROUND! Victoria is green 364 days a year (yes, we got a flurry once in March but it was gone by noon).

How's that for a sales pitch?

PS: I love Vancouver too but I'd be scared to live anywhere near it when the Olympics come to town!

Remember: no AirCare means it's time for that test pipe install and the 10-15hp it unleashes!

Thanks for all your input guys....both cities seem to have their pros, the idea of no air care, cheaper insurance, and better weather is nice....as is less traffic. The fact that you are somewhat isolated is good and bad I suppose, and there are ferries to Seattle too, that would be good. Are there many indie garages for servicing in Victoria?
Kevin.

Forward Automotive is the number one Porsche Independant Specialist here in town. There are others but why bother? The dealership (Speedway Motors) is also a good place, they've been selling/servicing Porsches since 1955! There's also a small shop just outside of town called Island Porsche that's run by one of the guys in the local Region. it's a two-guy garage with tons of experience (not to mention some cool rides like a 914-6GT!) between them.

Victoria is definately the way to go!

I want to second the recommendation of Forward. I always had great service there and *very* reasonable rates. I seem to remember there was almost always something interesting there being worked on: Porsches, Ferraris, Lotuses (Loti?) and once one of those big Unimogs. Cool machine.

exc911ence: That's a fabulous looking 912! My favourite colour It looks to be in exceptional shape. Has it been restored?
