I used to run a chip in my race motor when it was legal. Then I took it out when the rules changed. No change in power or lap times. Seems like alot better things to spend $250 on on than a chip.

BTW... 944 spec made them illegal since some guys could get a few mid range hp from putting a car on a dyno and creating a special custom chip for that particular motor. Needless to say that ain't cheap. So we banned it.

Oh... you are probably losing some hp with that cone filter. The cones have a bad transition from round to square and often make less hp than the stock airbox. Now I am only taking 3-5 hp max. If you have old head I bet you can find 5 hp in a fresh head with nice seating valves. No need to shave the head or anything, but old valves can leak and lose hp. A good number for a motor with a fresh head and no cat is 130-135 hp at rear wheels as measured on a dyno jet.

i dont know much about the engine in my car the po didnt tell me or my son much about it and i have had 944s before but my car seems quite fast and seems to put out pretty good horse power. the oil in the car when we bought it was as clean as cooking oil. and it could be because the car is gutted an stripped, not even a spare tire in it.it moves really well even with the cone filter and exhaust.

M758 are you suggesting spending the money on a cam instead?

Never used a cam since it is not legal in 944 spec where I race. I can say that it is probably not worth the money right now. These cars are not fast big hp cars. They are handling cars. Just stripping weight makes the cars much faster. Put your money on making sure the car is working properly and has a good suspension. Then do track time and autocross to get the most from the chassis.

If you just HAVE to have more HP here is also the LS1 option, or (contrary to popular belief) you CAN turbo your NA.

I will admit that it would be MUCH easier to just buy a 951, but if your car has sentimental value, then adding a turbo engine isn't as difficult as most people on RL would have you believe.

MAXHP chip here.

I lost the flat spot in the torque curve, mileage is good, throttle response is good. They are dyno'd too.

My 87 had an Autothority chip installed when I bought it, only other mod was a cone filter. I ran it for a year and thought nothing of it. When I went for an inspection it failed emissions. When I installed the factory chip back, the car passed with flying colors. I then left the factory chip in and found that the only noticable difference was that the factory chip had better fuel economy but a lower redline. In my case the chip was useless. I think it would make a difference if I had upgraded the exhaust and headers, etc.

Joe:

What kind of HP does the cat-delete alone free up? I ask because I no longer need to pass emissions inspections, but I still have the cat.
