What should a good alignment feel like?
After replacing my front control arms and front struts on my 944S2, I had an alignment performed at a local Porsche independent shop. They are extremely reputable (and I have been very happy with other work I have had done there), but I found out after the fact that he does not have his own alignment machine and takes the cars to another shop to use their machine (but does the work himself). I have no problem with that at all if it's done properly.
I did not ask beforehand to provide me with a before-and-after digital alignment printout from the machine, and didn't get one. I asked for a street alignment and these are the specs he claimed to set it to:
Front: -.5 camber, +.08 toe, max caster
Rear: -1.0 camber, +.02 toe
So here's the problem - after spending 3 hours of top $ labor <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> , I don't think it drives well. It has no self-centering action. When I am driving both at highway speeds and at parking lot speeds, if I turn the wheel, it stays that way and does not recenter. Is this normal? To my novice brain, it sounds more like it has negative toe or caster is too small. ??
What does a good street alignment feel like in a 944? Does the car re-center itself fairly well? I don't remember it acting like this before I did all the work, but of course I never thought about it...
I have a great relationship with the shop owner and will speak with him about this, but first I wanted to find out if I'm just nuts and that's the way it is supposed to drive.
Thanks!
Grant
Oh - car is 100% stock except for Koni yellow inserts.
